This DVD includes 21 performances of his biggest hits in the complete PS TV documentary with an additional 30 minutes of bonus content. Included are interviews with his kids Gunnar, Matthew, Sam, and Tracy, as well as Kirs Kristofferson and guitarist James Burton. Also included are never-before-seen perforamnces by Burton with Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. Arguably the prototype for reality television, Ricky Nelson and his parents, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, spent the years of Ricky's youth on a TV show closely based on their real lives and personalities. Showbiz appealed to young Ricky, and he embarked upon a career as a crooner and pop culture icon, which continued until his untimely death in a 1985 plane crash. This release includes a full-length PS TV documentary which features interviews with Ricky's children--Gunnar, Matthew, Tracy, and Sam--as well as 21 performances of some of his biggest hits. Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century.
