Personnel: Clifford Adams, Clifford Adams Jr. (trombone); Jonny King (piano); John Benítez (bass instrument); Ralph Peterson, Ralph Peterson, Jr. (drums); Antonio Hart (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Ralph Bowen (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Anthony Branker. Audio Mixers: Anthony Branker & Ascent; Michael Marciano. Liner Note Author: Laurie Altman. Recording information: Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, NY (05/18/2004/05/19/2004). Photographer: Anthony Branker & Ascent. Arranger: Anthony Branker & Ascent. The mellow and inspiring writing of jazz composer Anthony Branker is showcased on this set of mainstream jazz. "In God's Hands" conjures mid-1960s Miles Davis, while the reggae overtones of "Imani (Faith)" produce some laid-back soloing courtesy of pianist Jonny King and saxophonist Ralph Bowen. Although this CD has a picture of Anthony Branker holding a trumpet on its cover, the Princeton music professor does not actually play at all on this set. Instead, he contributed eight originals for the all-star sextet, music that recalls Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers at the time that Wayne Shorter was in the group, and the early John Coltrane Quartet. The music is modal-oriented, both swinging and modern, and a little derivative. Most of the selections have religious titles, but since this is an instrumental date, Branker's faith is primarily expressed in the passionate and spiritual solos of the musicians rather than in words. The chord changes are stimulating to the musicians even if none of the melodies are particularly memorable, and there are plenty of fine solos, particularly from altoist Antonio Hart and tenor saxophonist Ralph Bowen. All in all, this is a solid outing. Hopefully Branker will add his own trumpet to his next recording project. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[Antonio Hart] displays unfailing nuance and imagination, mostly on alto. Tenor/soprano saxophonist Ralph Bowen meets the same standard, Clifford Adams plays lusty hard-bop trombone and John Benitez's bass lays a solid but flexible foundation." $12.84 Personnel: Liberty Ellman (guitar); Henry Threadgill (flute, saxophone, alto saxophone); Jose Davila, Jose Davila (trombone, tuba); Stomu Takeishi (bass guitar); Elliot Humberto Kavee, Elliot Humberto Kavee (drums). Audio Mixer: Liberty Ellman. Recording information: Brooklyn Recording, Brooklyn, NY (11/2008). Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature ...

Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon ...
