| | Pere Ubu Why I Hate Women CD (2006)
Exile music CDs
$13.19 Named after a hypothetical and non-existent Jim Thompson novel, Pere Ubu's 13th studio album is one of the most interesting of their long tenure, and testament to the continually replenishing spiky ingenuity of group leader (and sole original member) David Thomas. WHY I HATE WOMEN examines a living slice of dread, as expressed by nervous drums, atmospheric guitars, and Thomas's anxiety-ridden singing. The jerky rhythms and vocals of the opening number "Two Girls (One Bar)" are like opening a door and being greeted by the entirety of the early 1980s no-wave scene. Ditto the unsettling swamp-fevered "Blue Velvet," which reverberates with David Lynchian despair and desire, and the hopped-up "Caroleen," which plays like a love song for troubled adolescents, without the emo bravado.
2006 album from David Thomas and his Ubu boys, old and new. Pere Ubu have really come out fighting with Why I Hate Women, racing towards all horizons at full tilt, pushing the experimental envelope further than ever, but also tightening up their trademark avant-punk ...
| | Under Byen Samme Stof Som Stof CD (2006) Digipak
Exile songs
$13.39 With the rise of groups such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Rós come more textured, orchestrated bands following in their footsteps. Under Byen is such a group, although lead singer Henriette Sennenvalt's fragile delivery on "Pilot" sounds as if it's Björk or PJ Harvey fronting the Sugarcubes. Delicate and yet quite intricate, the song takes on a dreamy but gritty tone as Sennenvalt guides things along à la Nico steering a Velvet Underground number. A slow, creeping song ensues titled "Den Her Sang Handler Om at Få Det Bedste Ud Af Det" which saunters along before strings and more instruments give it a different sonic hue. While pretty, it also takes on a slightly somber tone at times, particularly thanks to the combination of Thorbjorn Krogshede's piano and Nils Grondahl's violin accompaniment, which builds and builds into a very lush and enjoyable coda. Meanwhile, the group takes on a very ethereal, innocent, child-like approach to the moody and barren "Tindrer" that is a slower, somber effort and has the feeling of music coming from a deranged music box dancer. From there, the band shine on another ...

| | Haunted Melodies: Songs Of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. CD (1999)
Exile songs
$11.75 Several different jazz saxophonists team up to present the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk in a way it has never been done before -- faithfully. The frontmen include Joe Lovano, Michael Marcus, Donald Harrison, James Spaulding, John Stubblefield, Craig Handy, Justin and Scott Robinson, Eric Alexander, Jed Levy, and Jimmy Greene. Xavier Davis is all over this date, playing piano on ten of the 13 tracks. Bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Nasheet Waits comprise the rhythm section, while appearances are made by pianists Hilton Ruiz and Jaki Byard, one-time Kirk running mates. The music is immaculately selected and played in Kirk's vibrato-laden, blues-drenched style. Marcus picks up stritch and manzello for the "The Haunted Melody," and Harrison's alto and Handy's tenor coalesce beautifully during "Gifts and Messages." It takes no less than five saxophonists to match Kirk's sonic gestures on the stark, dramatic "Inflated Tear," with Levy leading on tenor followed by Greene, Justin Robinson's alto, Scott's baritone, and Marcus on stritch. Lovano shines on two cuts, his vibrant blues overtones punctuating "No Tonic Prez" and "Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith." Stubblefield and Spaulding star on the hip, urgent "Pedal Up" and "Blue Rol." Byard does an elegant solo version of "Bright Moments," and Justin Robinson's alto highlights "April Morning." This CD easily holds one's interest, and richly reminds us of the position that Kirk held as the most creative instrumentalist the world has ever known. Recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos
