This is not the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It contains the same songs, but performed by the Talking Heads. (In the movie, the various actors sing the songs.)
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Original Soundtrack/Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass guitar, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums).
Heads leader David Byrne directed the film True Stories, which layed out the surreal vision of modern American life often expressed in Talking Heads songs. In the film, the songs Byrne wrote for it are sung by the actors, but this album features the Talking Heads' own versions of those compositions. Though it came towards the end of their career, TRUE STORIES is perhaps the most '80s-sounding Heads album, the recordings full of compression, electronic percussion and synthesizers.
The songs pick up on the heavily rhythmic, world music-inflected sound the band established a few years earlier, but with more of a pop/rock compositional approach. Despite the relative lack of sonic experimentation or quirkiness, there are some solid tunes here, like the catchy, funky "Puzzlin' Evidence" and the album's sole hit "Wild, Wild Life," an ironic rocker that could have come straight off LITTLE CREATURES.
This Dualdisc features the complete album on CD side, along with 2 previously unreleased cuts: the Pop Staples vocal version of "Papa Legba" and the Tito Larriva vocal version of "Radio Head." The DVD side includes the 5.1 mix of Pop Staples' "Papa Legba" along with the videos for "Love For Sale" and "Wild WIld Life."
Principally recorded at Studio Southwest, Sunnyvale, Texas.
Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums).
Additional personnel: Tommy Morrell (steel guitar); Tommy Camfield (fiddle); Steve Jordan (accordion); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); The Bert Cross Choir, The St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School Choir. True Stories
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening ...
| | Talking Heads Fear Of Music CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak; DualDisc
True Stories
$14.89 Principally recorded at Chris and Tina's loft, Long Island City, Queens, New York.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
FEAR OF MUSIC is the point of transition between the angular art-school new wave of the Heads' early work and the P-Funk-inspired modalism of their early-'80s output. While there's nothing as funky or visionary as REMAIN IN LIGHT here, the album represents a step in a new direction. At the same time, the Heads' white-knuckled neuroticism is pushed to the extreme here. Almost unrelentingly dark and paranoid-sounding, the tunes find Byrne at his most Anthony Perkins-like, and the interplay of the guitars, even more syncopated and thoughtfully arranged than on the previous album, provides a pointillistic landscape on which Byrne can let his twitchy persona run free. ...
| | Talking Heads Remain In Light CD (1980) DualDisc
True Stories
$16.79 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with the release of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adopting a funky, modal approach. Abandoning traditional song form and chord progressions, the tunes here are built around layers of overdubbed keyboard, guitar and percussion parts that weave around each other in an almost fugue-like manner, relying on the adding and subtracting of elements in the mix for dynamics, instead of on chord changes and structural development.
It was a radical approach for ...
| | Talking Heads Speaking In Tongues CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Digipak; DualDisc
True Stories
$12.49 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
On REMAIN IN LIGHT, the Heads fused their twitchy, intellectual geek-rock sensibilities with an organic, spiritual funkiness that catapulted them into a new artistic realm, virtually unfettered by the shackles of their "new wave" past. SPEAKING IN TONGUES picks up where that album left off, expanding on the band's newfound funk aesthetic and even upping the danceability quotient a notch or two. The Heads let their hair down a bit more here than on REMAIN IN LIGHT, but while the tone is a bit less serious (as on the party-starting "Burning Down The House,") the highly developed conceptual sensibilites of Byrne and company are still at work, even without the assistance ...
| | Talking Heads Little Creatures CD (1985) Bonus Tracks; Digipak; DualDisc
True Stories
$16.79 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendly album, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To ...

Duster Bennett was the real thing. This was a cat who was a one-man blues band and who had a profound influence on his best mate, Peter Green. He also wrote one of the greatest British blues songs ever, "Jumping at Shadows." This two-CD collection with liner notes by Neil Slaven contains 41 tracks of Bennett recordings from his entire career, beginning ...
