"Endless Summer," Kentucky-based indie rock collective Follow the Train's leadoff track to Breath of Sigh, their debut for San Diego's Darla Records, sounds like just that, a sunset disappearing into the horizon viewed from the luxury of a beat-up convertible hugging the coast. This is dream pop in the vein of early-'90s 4AD bands like the Pale Saints and the Red House Painters with the cool, dark scent of the Church lingering behind it. Frontman Dennis Sheridan adopts Steve Kilbey's laconic delivery and breathy despair without becoming a slave to it, providing the more uptempo numbers like "Think in the Skin, " which starts out like Mask-era Bauhaus then evolves into an Echo & the Bunnymen chorus, and the Interpol-esque "Original Disconnect" with both volatility and urgency. With a sound so steeped in post-punk, new wave, and college rock, it's hard not to name-check so many bands, and the group's penchant for reverbed-out midtempo revelry can get awfully sleepy, but when it works, like on the gorgeous "Kentucky" and "Afraid," it's like a gilded window to both the past and the future with the listener on the deciding end. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | 30 Seconds To Mars This Is War CD (2009)
Breath Of Sigh album
$12.24 On This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars shift their music with the shifting times, adopting a hybrid of the Killers' retro new wave and My Chemical Romance's gothic prog, winding up with a sound that suits their stance. Producers Steve Lillywhite and Flood, both veterans of U2, do give This Is War an appropriately epic scale, helping to bring into focus this mix of synth rock, metal, and prog flavors with Auto-Tuned vocals, gurgling synthesized loops, Kanye cameos, and a children's choir on almost every other song. This move toward goth-glam requires 30 Seconds to emphasize hooks ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Breath Of Sigh CD music
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his ...

Breath Of Sigh album
$56.85 This limited edition of The Essential Kenny Loggins includes Loggins & Messina Classics.
Recorded between 1972 & 2000. Includes liner notes by David Wild.
Columbia/Legacy's 2001 release The Essential Kenny Loggins lives up to its billing, and not just because it has all of Loggins' solo hits. No, this collection earns its title because it contains no less than seven Kenny-fronted Loggins & Messina tracks, along with all his big solo hits, plus a sharp selection of album tracks and latter-day material, for a grand total of 35 tracks over two CDs. That's a lot of material, and many listeners may find that they are drawn to the first disc, which truly captures him in his prime by spanning from "Your Mama Don't Dance" to the era just before "Footloose." This is a compulsively listenable disc, from the sweet singer/songwriterisms of "Danny's Song" and "House at Pooh Corner" to the exquisitely ...
