Scotland's Average White Band deliver 9 soul-inspired tracks on their release, SHINE. This underrated Average White Band album produced by David Foster featured songs by AWB with Foster co-writing a couple with the guys. The album's smooth, jazzy sound turned off fans that liked AWB rawer. Time, however, has treated these tracks well (they can be found on CD) and what wasn't cutting-edge at the time has proven to be timeless trinkets. Check out: "Catch Me (Before I Have to Testify)," "Let's Go Round Again," "For Your Love," and "Into the Night," the LP's rawest cut. ~ Andrew Hamilton

$18.39 Over the years, the sophomore curse has plagued many talented artists, who showed considerable promise on their debut albums but failed to make good on that promise when they recorded their second albums. Gratefully, that wasn't a problem for Cerrone, whose sophomore album, Cerrone's Paradise, only strengthened his reputation in the Euro-disco field. This 1977 outing is similar to Cerrone's 1976 debut, Love in C Minor, but without sounding like musical recycling. On the original LP version of this album, the 16 minute title song took up all of side one, just as Love in C Minor's first side was devoted entirely to its title song. But "Cerrone's Paradise" is a fine orchestral Euro-disco work in its own right, and the slick but funky piece is far from a carbon copy of "Love in C Minor." Euro-disco fans also found a lot ...

$18.99 New CD by Master Instrumentalist Andy StatmanFor more than thirty years, internationally acclaimed clarinet and mandolin virtuoso Andy Statman has surprised discriminating fans by constantly breaking new ground in multiple styles and mixed genres. His new CD - entitled "Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge," the English equivalent of the acronym "Chabad" - is predictably unpredictable. It is not exactly klezmer, jazz, or the avant-garde American Roots music for which he is best known. Nor is it the brash, extroverted Jewish music we are used to hearing these days. Mr. Statman's latest creative effort might be described as the instrumental equivalent of real Chassidic singing at its best - but performed in an eclectic musical language of his own invention. Hailed as "the greatest Jewish clarinetist of his generation" by the Jerusalem Post, Statman takes us on a musical journey into the heart of Chassidic melody. The result is one of the most ...

This album stands out in the 2008 kids' music market because it actually sounds like an album for children. This point was driven home for me as I watched my two-year-old daughter react to Be Nice... my daughter has always loved music, but I've never seen an album hold her attention right away like this." - Jeff Giles, Editor-In-Chief, Popdose"Sweet songs about small moments make a big impact. This well-produced and imaginative collection of children's music has enough variety to engage older siblings and parents as well as toddlers. Prepare to be charmed by sparkling vocals and instrumental tracks... an impressive degree of taste and musicianship."***** (5 stars out of 5) - Kathi Goldmark, Common Sense Media"Duo Ilene Altman and Steve Equi play and sing everything on Be Nice, and their simple, clean production keeps the performances low-key and intimate. They use Pop, Rock, R&B, Reggae, Doo-Wop, Tin Pan Alley, and Country styles on songs about friends, grammar, playgrounds, dictionaries, and kids' neverending questions about life. And dig 'Know What the Nos Are,' a Queen-like tune about all the things kids aren't supposed to do, that sounds like a junior 'Bohemian Rhapsody;' and 'Sometimes I Just Need a Hug,' a sweet ballad that could have been cowritten with James Taylor, Carole King, and Paul Simon." - Warren Truitt, Children's Music That Rocks, Sr. Children's Librarian, NY Public Library"The title is irresistible and their story is just as nice. Our kids loved 'Stinky Diaper' and moms loved 'It’s Not Nice.' From rock to country, the lyrics are sweet and fun while giving all of us a good message: Be nice!" - Heather Kempskie, Editor, Parents and Kids magazine"Leeny and Steve score on their debut album. These self-described 'middle-aged rockers' offer 16 original tunes that have real kid appeal. The lyrics teach, but never preach. The album features various musical styles, such as reggae, rock, and country. Leeny's voice changes to match the mood of the piece. Several cuts deal with behavior. Many songs will be useful during story time. Never over-produced, this album should be enjoyed for its simplicity."Stephanie Bange, School Library Journal"Aimed at the toddler audience, Leeny and Steve perform original pop songs with great musical accompaniment that will have the kids dancing along. Leeny sings lead on all the cuts, with a voice similar to Carole King's. The songs are done in a variety of styles, from ballads, to lullabies, to rocking dance songs, which shows the versatility of the artists and should also appeal to kids. All of the percussion and piano are standouts on these songs. Teachers may want to ...
