Blame whomever you want to for Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, but the bottom line is that Rosanne Cash's masterpiece Seven Year Ache paved the way for all of those folks as well as for Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, and then some. Proclaimed by Cash and her husband/producer/collaborator, Rodney Crowell, as "punktry," the album adds an entirely new twist on the Nashville sound. Perhaps it is because this is L.A. country and reflects the cocaine bliss sound of the era as well as Fleetwood Mac's Tusk does. Utilizing everything from synthesizers and rock arrangements to pop ballad-styled charts and plenty of attitude, Seven Year Ache yielded three number one singles and songs by rock musicians such as Tom Petty and singer/songwriters like Keith Sykes and Steve Forbert. Of the singles, Cash penned two; the title track, which is a sorrowful indictment of her husband's philandering ways, and the shattering ballad "Blue Moon With Heartache." The third, the smash "My Baby Thinks He's a Train," was written by Asleep at the Wheel's Leroy Preston. Musically, the band included many of the same players from the Right or Wrong sessions, with the emerging vocal talent of former Pure Prairie League member Vince Gill. Forbert's "What Kinda Girl" is almost rockabilly in its shuffling intensity and punk bravado. It dares the listener to define the protagonist just to shatter the preconception. There's also a nod to tradition here in Cash's beautifully updated read of the Merle Haggard/Red Simpson nugget "You Don't Have Very Far to Go," complete with whinnying pedal steels and a honky tonk backbeat. In "My Baby Thinks He's a Train," Cash and Crowell very consciously offer a new generation interpretation of dad Johnny's sound. This rocks harder yet is smooth as silk and full of that desolate want Johnny offered in his delivery. But unlike her father's, this isn't a forlorn yearning want, it's a pissed off anthemic want. For the ambulance chasers, this record with its songs of infidelity and broken promises may indeed be the first crack in a marriage and collaboration that ended a decade later. The tempo borrows the old Tennessee Three rhythm, but sped up into the stratosphere, with a shifting Western swing line near the refrain. Over 20 years after it was first issued, Seven Year Ache sounds as fresh and revolutionary as it did when it was issued. Any album that stands that test of time in a field like country deserves to be regarded as a classic. Yes, this is the one that changed everything. ~ Thom Jurek

Following up strong on the weak sales and confused reviews of Fleetwood Mac's misunderstood experimental extravaganza, TUSK, was Stevie Nicks's first solo album, BELLA DONNA. The 1981 record featured two smash singles, "Edge of Seventeen" and the Tom Petty duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," that reaffirmed that the Arizona native was one of the biggest female stars of the era. The surprising thing, given Nicks's fairly limited songwriting role in Fleetwood Mac, is that the entire album is start-to-finish solid, particularly the spectral ...

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN MELLOW is also available separately on CD on Griffin (373-2). This early release from singer Olivia Newton-John showcases her country-pop mode, with "Have You Ever Been Mellow," "Goodbye Again," and others showing off her refined vocal grace. The hit single "Have You Never Been Mellow" carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after "I Honestly Love You" brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered John Denver's "Take Me Home ...

Rosanne Cash's catalog on Columbia is nothing if not formidable. Her pioneering meld of country, rock & roll (with an emphasis on "rock"), folk, and even blues, her topical concerns (which went deeper than most songwriters who came before her in taking on the tough topics of life), and her insistence on working outside the Nashville box scored her a number of hits and blazed the trail for many women who came later. King's Record Shop followed by two years her flirtation with the kind of pop coming out of England in droves, the radically underappreciated Rhythm & Romance. King's Record Shop -- produced by her then-husband ...

John Duffey Always In Style: A Classic Collection CD  (2000)

Seven Year Ache

The title of this postmortem retrospective is an affectionate gag; John Duffey, with his never-changing crewcut, his Hawaiian shirts, and his polyester pants, was rarely if ever in style. He had, in the words of one critic, "the voice of an angel trapped in the body of a professional bowler." But his work as a founding member of the Country Gentlemen and leader of the Seldom Scene helped both to define and, ultimately, to bring to maturity the entire "progressive" subgenre of bluegrass music. The 21 tracks collected here come from the latter part of his career, a period that stretches from the early '80s to just before his untimely death in 1996. The majority of them are from Seldom Scene albums, but two of the strongest performances ...

“Fear finally consumed me as a young man. I didn’t understand the world and why it rejected me. I learned the power of hatred. First I hated myself. Then I hated my mother. I cursed and I spit. I spit venom. I hated my school and my peers. I hated their opportunities and families. I hated society. My anger was fed by the flames of the past. I remember being poor and how it felt to be laughed at. When I was 16, I stole my first gun. No one was laughing at me anymore. I smoked weed. I drank 40 ounce bottles and flipped off the police. I stole from my neighbors and gave to the poor. I felt my family and friends were the poor. I thought I was righteous. I was beaten by those just like me. I shot ...
