Robbery album Product Description
Robbery album by Teena Marie was released Jul 12, 2005 on the Legacy label. A protracted absence from the studio (a one-year release gap in the '80s was equal to a five-year gap in the early 2000s) caused by a notorious legal dispute with Motown did little to stall Teena Marie's momentum. Robbery, Marie's fifth album and first for Epic, didn't perform nearly as well on the pop chart as 1981's It Must Be Magic, but the devout black following remained, which obviously had no problem with Marie's discreet slipping of a little more rock and Latin jazz into her R&B. Epic wisely let their new acquisition do her thing -- it's the first album written completely by Marie, and the gradual development in her sound would pay off tenfold with 1984's crossover hit "Lovergirl." (Meanwhile, Marie's ex label was nurturing D.O.A. projects like Monalisa Young's Knife and High Inergy's Groove Patrol. ) So is Robbery merely transitional? Not at all. While directing a rotating cast of support, including but not limited to the Average White Band's Steve Ferrone, go-to Brazilian percussionist Paulinho da Costa, and undervalued keyboard wiz Patrice Rushen, Marie comes up with a set of songs that rivals anything she did for Motown. ...See Full Description

great cd sound is better than original version. classic ballads that still sound great today as well as a great remix of playboy. By marc (Montréal. QC)
Robbery: REMIXED, REMASTERED, and REMARKABLE! Without a doubt, Teena put her heart, foot, and soul in this concept album. After listening to the torch ballads "Dear Lover" and "Cassanova Brown" alone, I became a bonafied Teena Marie fan for life. I have every Teena Marie CD in my music collection as a result of experiencing Teena's genius on this CD, and Robbery remains my all time favorite CD by her. If you don't have this CD, it's truly one must have that shouldn't remain overlooked. By Anthony (Menifee, CA, USA)
A Remixed Robbery! This album appeared in 1983 after Teena Marie's infamous Motown lawsuit and is today as it was then, an R&B masterpiece. Opening with the urgent and desperate rock guitar-infused title cut, we, the listener, are taken on a musical journey of the stuff Soul Music is made of. Also included here for the first time are remixed and instrumental extended versions of the classic Dance joint, "Playboy," along with the extended version of the album's first hit single, "Fix It." If you're a lover of classic Old School R&B, then this is Old School to it's purest degree. If you're a newer fan of Lady Tee's music, this album, aside of her Motown catalog items is an excellent place to start. Her singing is superb (as it always is) and this is a woman that successfully writes, arranges, produces and performs nearly ALL of her material singlehandedly. No other woman (other than Angela Winbush) has been able to successfully do this and Teena Marie has danced circles around Winbush anyway. By Scott "Starr" Sarabia (Portland, ME, USA)
good album One of my favorite Teena M. albums. I have always loved Shadow Boxing and Midnight Magnet. One thing about Teena that's great - she composes and produces much of her own music. And her lyrics are interesting and not cheesy. By emailmewhenuwish (Brooklyn, NY) This review is for a different format.
Teena's grand endeavor This was the first creative-control effort for Teena and is packed with the fruits of her labor. So many fab memories on this one, and so-o-o-o-o funky! This entire project is infectious so I will not bother with a "Faves" list. This is a good place to start though if you are looking to add her to your collection of 80's funk-filled jams and balladry. By fred (Niagara Falls NY) This review is for a different format.
