G3, a guitar supergroup that features top-tier shredders Steve Vai, Joe Satrianni, and John Patrucci, is an axe-lover's dream come true. The band's usual relentless energy is cranked up even higher on this live Tokyo date, and the heavy riffing and blistering leads throughout the set are absolutely ferocious.

Patrucci, who rose to prominence in the progressive metal band Dream Theater, distinguishes himself here, and proves that his six-string skills are on par with his revered cohorts. In addition to some extended jams, there are covers of classic, riff-defining rock songs (Deep Purple's "Smoke On the Water" and Jimi Hendrix's "Foxey Lady," among them) that add a dash of fun to the jaw-dropping pyrotechnics.

Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, ...
Scorpio Rising
Death In Vegas Scorpio Rising CD  (2003) Bonus Track; Japan

Live In Tokyo music CDs
CD $24.45
Additional personnel includes: Paul Weller, Dot Allison, Hope Sandoval, Nicola Kuperus, Susan Dillane (vocals). SCORPIO RISING is a 2003 release by U.K. big beat act Death In Vegas. For the duo's anticipated third album, Scorpio Rising, Death in Vegas has seemingly adopted the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, once again drawing from elements of gritty rock, techno repetition, and spacy psychedelia. On first listen, Scorpio Rising (the name is taken from a Kenneth Anger film) feels overly monotonous, as nearly every song quickly finds its groove and sticks with it from start to finish with little variety in the process. However, multiple listens reveal that not only is Scorpio Rising noticeably more upbeat overall than its gothic predecessor, but its diversity comes from the many genres and musical styles that it incorporates. It doesn't hurt either that the album also stars a new cast of guest musicians. Returning to the fold is Dot Allison ("Diving Horses"), who is joined by the likes of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval ("Killing Smile" and "Help Yourself") and Woodbine's Susan Dillane ("Girls" and "23 Lies"), all of whom are delegated to contribute their breathy voices over lush psychedelic soundscapes for an effect that is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine. Fittingly handling the reins of the album's more rocking numbers are Oasis' Liam Gallagher and former Jam frontman Paul Weller. Both of their efforts tip their hat to 1960s rock, with the title track highlighting Gallagher as he sings over what sounds like a blend of middle-period Beatles and Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men," while Weller's strident take on Gene Clark's "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" provides the album with some fun and unpredictability. Also unpredictable is "Killing Smile," which is among Death in Vegas' most welcoming and folk-influenced songs. The track also accentuates the unique combination of Sandoval's vocals and the string arrangements of Indian violinist Dr. Subramaniam, who also pair up for the grand "Help Yourself," another of the ...

Tell Me
Annie Wells Tell Me CD  (2009)

Live In Tokyo CD music
CD $15.19
Wells has four albums to her credit, including the 2009 release, 'Tell Me.

' Her writing - lyrically and musically - tends toward the melancholy but tinged with hope. As in, for example, the new disc's 'Little Sparrow,' a song inspired by French singer Edith Piaf and embellished with accordion by Ed Marris:'Let me hear your memories of a life with no regretTell me all your street kid stories I never will forgetThe first time I heard you sing I heard everything that ever hurt youAnd everything you ever dreamed ofWhen love was everything and everything was loveI love you Little Sparrow when you sing your songWhen you sing you break my heart with your sorrow ...'Or the song 'Driving,' which acknowledges a heavy heart - one that sees raindrops falling on a smiling girl's face as tears - but returns to a theme of perseverance: '... just keep driving, the sun going down behind me, just keep driving into the night ...''There's a lot of loss in some of the songs,' Wells said. 'It's safe to say that I write from personal experience; I think most people do. ... I think to make a good song, it's important to tell a story and make emotional connections with the listeners. I guess that would make me sort of a traditional songwriter.

'The twin themes of loss and hope have been evident from the start, reflected in the title of her debut album from 1995, 'Sad & Beautiful,' in which she works through the grief from the death of her mother. She's drawn to those themes in the work of others, as well: 'Tell Me' includes one song, 'I'll Guide Your Sweetest Dreams,' written by guitarist Phil Marshall about a dying person reassuring loved ones of his continued presence with them.

Strong, pivotal and important women often factor as influences for Wells: Her mother. Piaf. Artist Georgia O'Keeffe, whose fascination with the Southwest is reflected in Wells' 'The Faraway.

' Wells' great-aunt Mary, who never married and ran a farm despite suffering from polio. (Mary, when unable to drive anymore, gave Wells a Rambler station wagon; her reflective ride home is recounted in the song 'Mary': 'Mary relied on strength and pride and family ties/And I don't know if I will see her again/And as I drove 500 miles across Ohio/I left her along ...')The devotion to one's craft and passions - and perseverance in seeing them through - is another major Wells theme.

'What really struck me (about Piaf) was her devotion to singing - no matter what was going on, the most important ...
