Liner Note Author: Sid Gribetz. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/23/2009). Photographer: John Abbott . Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established ...

| | Gebhard Ullmann Cut It Out CD (2006)
Let The Truth Be Played
$14.39 There are few avant-jazzers quite as prolific as reedman Gebhard Ullmann, who has released almost 40 albums as a leader and plans to release four more by early 2006 -- though you could argue that number of releases counts for less when your focus is on free improvisation. (After all, improv albums require notably less preparation than do composed ones, and, if you're a cynic, you might suspect that there's no such thing as a bad take anyway.) On Cut It Out, Ullmann is teamed up with bassist Chris Dahlgren (who makes various electronic contributions as well) and percussionist Jay Rosen. The session ...
| | Corey Harris Zion Crossroads CD (2007)
Let The Truth Be Played
$14.35 Personnel: Corey Harris (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, background vocals); Cheick Hamala Diabate (vocals); Michael Goldwasser (guitar, melodica, shaker, wood block); Kenny Kosek (fiddle); Jeff Romano (harmonica); Victor Rice (organ); Victor Axelrod (shaker, tambourine). Audio Mixers: Michael Goldwasser; Victor Rice. Recording information: Capture Sound Studio, Brooklyn, NY; Greenwood Studios, Greenwood, VA; Mellowstone Studios, Queens, NY; Obstacle Course Studios, Brooklyn, NY. Photographer: Aaron Hawkins. Arranger: Michael Goldwasser. Roots revivalist Corey Harris continues his ambitious exploration of musical history with ZION CROSSROADS, a project that finds Harris immersed in the rhythms and consciousness of traditional roots reggae. Unlike Harris's previous efforts, however, which blend country blues with jazz, Americana, and African styles, ZION CROSSROADS sticks closely to its genre, riding deep, dread rhythms in a manner that recalls Burning Spear and Black Uhuru. The exceptions are the African-inflected "Walter Rodney" and the straight country tune "Plantation Town." The overall result is a satisfying, groove-driven album heightened by a political consciousness that will appeal to Harris fans as well as to classic roots reggae enthusiasts. Corey Harris has spent his career digging for roots, looking for the links that bind his beloved blues with African music and other tributaries of black music, including old-time jazz and R&B. On the brilliant 2003 Mississippi to Mali, Harris took his recording equipment to the field in those two seemingly far-apart locales, and discovered they were closer than you might think. Before that, on 1999's Greens from the Garden, he found common threads between the blues of the Delta and the many variations of Americana that Louisiana has to offer. For Zion Crossroads, Harris turns his attention to reggae -- real ...
| | I Think My Older Brother Used To Listen To Lagwagon CD (2008) Extended Play
Let The Truth Be Played
$6.29 Lagwagon: Joey Cape (vocals). Deep into their career, the first band signed to Fat Wreck Chords, Lagwagon maintains their brand of rollicking punk rock with pounding drums, energetic Brit-poppy major-to-minor chord changes, and sunshine-soaked melodies. Nothing new here, which is a good thing. Relentless and polished, the So-Cal sound permeates their collectively tanned fiber and at times they sound nearly identical to latter day Descendents while giving the occasional nod to NOFX. Refreshingly, unlike most skate-punk singers with one hand in the pocket of Fat Mike, vocalist Joey Cape refrains from singing through his nose and chooses to stick with his unforced throaty singing style, proof that the band is ...
