With the departure of their founding vocalist -- the heartwarmingly named Sauron -- the remaining members of Polish death metal veterans Decapitated have apparently decided to mark the installment of his successor, Covan, with a wholesale change of direction for their fourth studio album, Organic Hallucinosis. Launching off of their new frontman's more versatile skills in delivering various stages of deathly grunting, the band has stepped up the complexity of their songwriting to match, while establishing a non-traditional death metal aesthetic somewhere between the lopsided time signatures of Meshuggah and down-tuned power grooves of Pantera. And even though the exceedingly challenging results don't usually make for ideal moshpit conditions, intellectual onslaughts like "A Poem About an Old Prison Man," "Day 69" and "Flash-B(l)ack," do promise hours of gradual interpretation for those inclined towards thinking man's extreme metal. They also lack nothing in terms of intensity or brutality, only rarely exposing even the remotest traces of melody (see "Invisible Control") or turning down the volume for haunting, quieter passages ("Visual Delusion"). All of these new developments undoubtedly constrict the potential audience for a sound that's already likely to polarize longtime Decapitated fans, never mind try to seduce new ones; but one can't fault the band for trying, since it's not like they've managed to break out of the death metal underground with their previous works, anyway. And by limiting this album's running time to less than half an hour, it's almost as if Decapitated are intentionally giving their fans with a quick and relatively painless introduction to both their new membership and ambitions. Seems like a good strategy, if it works out in the long run. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Filthy Heavy, Heavy, Heavy. Vogg's guitarwork is excellent throughout the songs. Witeks drumming is unreal. The production is great. A must have. Submitted by Fellow Polish Fan (Chicago) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
CRUSHING !!! This one jumped into my favourite technical DM albums ever - it's heavy, complex, varied ... it's perfect - even the new vocals fit to the music perfectly ! Amazing groove, odd rythm changes a la Meshuggah, devastatig drumbeats and pummeling bass lines and these heavy as hell guitars ... delicious ... MUST HAVE Submitted by Gniewo (Czaplinek, Polska) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

This is what EXTREME metal is all about! I got this album this-afternoon, cuz it was just released today! It's brilliant! an abosolutely spotless death metal album. The riffs are grinding brutality capable enough to tear your face off. The double-bass drumming is fast enough to make you sick and the new vocalist is amazing too! Definitely one of the heaviest albums I've picked up in a while. Submitted by Rob (Gloucester, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Organic Hallucinosis album
$14.05 In the dark, murky realm of death metal, perhaps no band is more worthy of taking hold Excalibur's hilt and leading the next charge down the mountain into fiery oblivion than Poland's Decapitated, and one need look no further for proof than on the band's 2000 debut, Winds of Creation. Much has been made of the band's supposed "tender" age (the average age of the members was around 18 when Winds of Creation was released), and in fact, early on, they were slighted from the respect they would have otherwise been due because of this; however, it must be remembered that a certain gruff-throated, engine-wristed young vocalist/guitarist for another certain popular metal band was only 18 when his band's debut, Kill 'Em All, was released, and needless to say, as is the case here, tender had nothing to do with it. Ironically, in the eyes of many metal fans, Winds of Creation is almost as much of an astonishingly groundbreaking album as Kill 'Em All was in its day. To begin with, the band ...
