In the grand tradition of Bono's the Fly, David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, and Garth Brooks' Chris Gaines, painter/musician Chris Taylor assumed the "anti-hero alter ego" of Cavalier King on his 2006 release The Sun Revolutions. It appears as though the King's debut full-length is a concept album of sorts, but as its press release states, the album "tells of an awakening in a fearful and ever-darkening world, dominated by wrenching loss and worse, crushing tedium." If that weren't confusing enough, it also warns that the tracks on The Sun Revolutions are "not merely stories, but epic expressions of chivalry, valor and the search for truth." Enough with this heavy-handed insight -- the album is full of alt-pop/rock that at certain points brings to mind a few renowned artists. At various points, Cavalier King brings to mind Jeff Buckley (especially Taylor's vocals on the album opening "Renegade"), Morrissey ("Angels of Mars"), Jonathan Richman ("The Finest Hour"), and even Rufus Wainwright ("Champagne & Cocaine") -- if the latter strummed an electric guitar instead of plunking on a piano. While The Sun Revolutions may have some deep meaning within its lyrics, fans of crafted rock should be able to enjoy it on a purely musical level. ~ Greg Prato

It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Bite Down Hard is more aggressive hard pop from Jay Ferguson, the ex-Spirit member's keyboards and songs dominating the groups second LP. It's boogie rock much like Edgar Winter's White Trash, borderline Southern rock by way of the West Coast a year after the group's well-crafted hit single "Run Run Run" and four years before Ferguson would find his way to "Thunder Island." As the three-piece Spirit featuring Randy California and Ed Cassidy needed the elements that John Locke and Jay Ferguson brought to the table, so too Jo Jo Gunne lacks the eccentricities of Cass and California. "60 Minutes to Go" is a perfect example; it is a riff that Willie Alexander released on MCA as "Rock & Roll Riff #78," but Alexander instills the left-field stuff that puts it over the top. The same riff in Ferguson's hands is blasé. The really strange thing is that it is highly improbable that either musician heard of the other, and that even some of the melody of the verse is similar is remarkable.
