Angst is a unique soundtrack for a documentary film about judicial scandal in Austria. The music came first and the film was edited to fit the soundtrack, so the score drives the film. Klaus Schulze called upon his many influences to build this project. The primary style is Berlin school, but Schulze uses his symphonic synths, his classical training, and his atmospheric sensitivity as well. For the most part, it does work as a stand-alone musical event, but loses some of its impact with the rhythmic pieces. They have drama and mystery and are, undoubtedly, important to the score -- they just don't stand alone. ~ Jim Brenholts

Angst
$13.45 Vanity of Sounds was originally released in 2000, as disc one of the ten-CD box set Contemporary Works I. SPV's Revisited subsidiary gave it its first single release in 2005, early in its career-encompassing reissue program of Klaus Schulze's discography. The album consists in four long pieces (between 15 and 23 minutes each). Compared to the four-volume Ballett series (also taken from the Contemporary Works I box set), the music here is more consistent and closer to Schulze's long-established sound -- no Arabic influences here, no techno episodes. In fact, Vanity of Sounds marks a return to an earlier sound, closer to Dreams and Miditerranean Pads, or even Dig It. The pieces are long and slow-evolving as usual, and sequenced as if forming four movements of a single continuous ...

| | Klaus Schulze Das Wagner Disaster CDs (1994)
Angst
$17.35 Klaus Schulze staged two legendary concerts in 1994. They were on the 27th and 31st of May respectively. At that time, Schulze's fans were clamoring for a CD of remixes of his older material. He gave them something different. Das Wagner Desaster: Live is a double CD from those concerts. The source material for each show is the same, but the mixes are different. CD one is "The Wild Mix" and CD two is "The Soft Mix." The music is pure Schulze. It is classic Berlin school electronica by a master practitioner of the style. Schulze surrounds his deep sequences with vast atmospheres and dramatic melodies. This CD is important for e-music fans. For Berlin school collectors, it is essential. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | Klaus Schulze Inter*Face CD (1985)
Angst
$14.59 Inter*Face is a disappointment. Klaus Schulze combines Berlin school electronica with rock & roll textures better than most. He does so on this album and he also incorporates some (ouch!) disco beats. There are four tracks on this CD. The first three -- about half the disc -- are run of the mill at best. Track four, the title track, is vintage Schulze. It features spacy atmospheres, experimental timbres, symphonic textures, and deep sequences. The overall CD is uneven. This is for die-hard Schulze fans only. ~ Jim Brenholts

| | Compo Moving Forward, Reaching Back CD (2000)
Angst
$13.25 Kurt Weil will be a new name to most jazz fans, although the Swedish vibraphonist has been active since the 1950s. Many of his compositions on this all-original release have a definite post-bop flavor, with "Off Base-Next Case" and "Back to Square One" being particularly strong examples. Weil's approach to his instrument is a swinging one, while alto and tenor saxophonist Christoph Grab and pianist Stefan Stahel also sparkle and bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb are actually the best-known musicians on the date. The problem with this CD is that most of the tunes seem formulaic and just don't stand up to repeated hearings, especially the dull quintet tracks that add guitarist Joe Beck to the ...

| | Bossa Nova Lounge: Corcovado CD (2002) (Import) Enhanced CD; Import; Brazil
Angst
$24.95 Brazilian musician, Ronaldo Bastos, selected 14 bossa nova songs for this 2002 compilation.
Many bossa nova compilations are capable of startling even educated listeners because so much quality music was recorded in Brazil during the mid- to late '60s. Bossa Nova Lounge: Corcovado, one in a series, is no different. Compilers Leonel Pereda and Ronaldo Bastos are very knowledgeable sources, and they keep to the first rank of bossa artists even while they choose performances unfamiliar to many (and, for the sake of continuity, also restrict the inclusions to a narrow period of time). This has the best lineup of any in the series, including excellent performances from nearly every great Brazilian artist of the '60s and '70s, such as Jobim, Jorge Ben, Joyce, Sylvia Telles, Wanda Sá, and Joao Donato. Highlights occur throughout a compilation of this caliber, but Sá's version of "Agua de Beber" stands out, far more beguiling than Astrud Gilberto's better-known version. Roberto Menescal's "Surfboard" is one of the lightest, most playful versions of any Jobim song, while Donato's delight at toying with the melody on "Só Danço Samba" follows close behind. ~ John Bush
A magical 2002 bossa-nova collection from the Bossa Nova Lounge series selected by Ronaldo Bastos with the international listener in mind. Tom Jobim, Joyce, and Wanda Sa are only a few of the highlighted artists on this beautiful compilation.
Personnel: Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, guitar, piano); Jorge Ben (vocals, ...

| | Erin Bode Don't Take Your Time CD (2004)
Angst
$14.39 Erin Bode's national recording debut for Maxjazz is an impressive affair. The young singer, who is gifted with a sweet and clear voice, wanted to cover her favorite songs, so here she delves into rock, bluegrass, pop ballads, R&B, and standards from the Great American Songbook, and is backed by a very supportive rhythm section consisting of pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Montez Coleman. Most of the first five tracks are eye-openers. She confidently opens the CD with a country-flavored original, "Don't Take Your Time," co-written and jointly arranged with Adam Maness, who also plays piano on this track (a bonus CD-Rom video track of a live studio performance of "Don't Take Your Time" is also included). The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" has been performed in a jazz setting before, but Bode is one of a just a few jazz singers to record it, and Barth's imaginative arrangement is a great improvement over the typically overblown charts used elsewhere. She then switches gears to tackle Bill Monroe's mournful bluegrass ballad "In the Pines," multi-tracking a backing vocal in spots, and adding Adam Rogers' delicious acoustic slide guitar and Meg Okura's gritty violin. Rogers is also on-hand for Bode's funky take of Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You." However, her performance of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" sticks a little too close to the pop world, especially with the harmony vocals of Jerry Barnes. Hardcore jazz fans will likely gravitate toward the standards, as that's where she is at her best. Her lightly swinging take of "But Not for Me" features Grenadier's unusual bassline and the inventive Steve Nelson on vibes. She captures the essence of Matt Dennis' sentimental ballad "Junior and Julie," while she displays the skills of an actress ...
