(2 Customer Reviews)
In the three years after Vivian Green released A LOVE STORY, she had a child and fleshed out the neo-soul nuances that made that 2002 debut such a delightful surprise. VIVIAN reflects the Philly native's increased confidence, and exhibits her willingness to incorporate more hip-hop spice into her overall sound. Much as they did on her first record, the trials and tribulations of romance continue to be Green's muse. Chuck Treese's rapid-fire acoustic-guitar riffs spice up the indignation of "Mad," and the sharper beats on the samples lacing "I Like It (But I Don't Need It)" give Green a mix of vulnerability and determination reminiscent of Mary J. Blige.
Green's unwillingness to settle for sub-standard treatment also comes across in the lush but melancholy "Gotta Go Gotta Leave (Tired)." Green also finds plenty of positivity in her love life, though. There's a willingness to make her relationship work amid the swaggering beats and scratching of "All About Us," and a fantasy about having a tryst with her significant other within the swirling ambiance of "Sweet Thing."

The City of Brotherly Love continues to be a wellspring of neo-soul talent. Another artist moving from Philadelphia to the national stage is singer Vivian Green, who co-wrote most of her debut A LOVE STORY and subsequently wowed audiences as an opening act for Maxwell's tour. Weaned on a steady diet of jazz and R&B, Green takes a laid-back approach that makes her a natural balladeer, and uses the fertile field of relationships--failed and otherwise--as a rich source of material. Whether she's questioning the erratic quality of a romantic union ("Emotional Rollercoaster"), resigning herself to a broken romance over a bed of cocktail lounge piano and trumpet ("No Sittin' By The Phone"), or defiantly questioning a lover's unrealistic demands ("Superw

Vivian CD music

| | Angie Stone The Art of Love & War CD (2007)
Vivian songs
$9.89 The re-launched Stax label is an appropriate home for neo-soulster Angie Stone. Her 2007 album THE ART OF LOVE & WAR, released on Stax, nods to classic styles, blending funk, soul, balladry, and R&B in one tasty package. The appearance of soul great Betty Wright on the album highlight, "Baby," only strengthen the retro vibe.
Yet THE ART OF LOVE & WAR is contemporary through and through. Shimmering with a modern, digital production sheen, the album is clearly steeped in urban contemporary R&B, more lush and languid than stripped down and raw. Stone is no mere puppet of the past (and apparently neither is the revamped Stax): her voice, delivery, and feel are all her own, whether on butter-smooth love songs ("Make It Last") or hard-swinging groovers ("Play Wit It").
Audio Mixers: Victor Flores; Jon Nettlesbey; Khaliq Glover.

| | 2001: A Space Odyssey Blu-ray (1968) Widescreen; Remastered; Special Edition; Dubbed; Subtitled
Vivian album
$22.79 A four-million-year-old black monolith is discovered on the moon, and the government (while hiding the situation from the public) sends a team of scientists on a fact-finding mission. Eighteen months later, another team is sent to Jupiter in a ship controlled by the perfect HAL 9000 computer to further investigate the giant object--but on this trip something goes terribly wrong.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Director and (with Arthur C. Clarke) co-screenwriter Stanley Kubrick has created a visual and aural spectacle that stands as one of the greatest achievements ever put on celluloid. The film begins with the "Dawn of Man" segment, about the evolution of apes, and then ventures into ...
| | Usher Here I Stand CD (2008)
Vivian CD music
$10.39 Following the nine-times platinum CONFESSIONS, Usher had a tall order to fulfill with 2008's HERE I STAND. To his credit, the R&B sensation didn't merely replicate CONFESSIONS, but instead moved into new thematic territory while still remaining true to his now-patented silky-smooth urban contemporary sound. Lyrically, HERE I STAND reflects Usher's commitments as a husband and father, with songs like "Before I Met You" and "Lifetime" replacing the wild narratives of his bachelor days. R&B's ...
| | Lil' O Da Fat Rat Wit Da Cheeze CD (2000)
Vivian music CDs
$6.49 With a forceful but unhurried style of rapping, Lil' O get his message across in a big way on DA FAT RAT WIT DA CHEEZE. While his mindset and lyrical focus are set squarely on thug life and gangsta scenarios, the hardcore topics and ghetto-reality raps are offset by some clever touches in both the words and the music. For instance, the sophisticated vocal harmonies on the chorus of "Beg, Steal and Borrow" sweeten the bitter pill of a song about doing whatever one must in order to make it on the mean streets. In addition to the grim slice-of-life depictions, Lil' O ...
| | CocoRosie Noah's Ark CD (2005)
Vivian songs
$12.89 The sisters Casady set the weirdness bar awfully high on their homemade debut, LA MAISON DE MON REVE, but this inspired follow-up finds the bar ascended as the angels take it on the road, recording everywhere from barnyards to actual music studios. As usual, classically trained vocalist Sierra delivers the delirious operatic vocalizing and plays piano, dulcimer, and autoharp while Bianca coos like a 12-year old vampire Billie Holiday and makes percussive noise from computers and shakers with equal abandon.
The difference here is in the confidence, the polish, and the guest ...
| | Moody Blues Question of Balance CD (1970) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Germany; SACD Hybrid; United Kingdom
Vivian album
$17.55 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues's 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It's Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.
There is a clear attempt to pare back the lush excesses of their earlier work in favor of a leaner rock sound, as heard on cuts like John Lodge's pell-mell "The Tortoise and the Hare." Still, one of the album's standouts is Ray Thomas's "And the Tide Rushes In," a lovely psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who's Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues' albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." A QUESTION OF BALANCE is a fine album, and a clear preparation for its successor EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR, one of the band's finest moments.
