In the not-so-distant future, a portal has been discovered leading from Earth to Mars, where the government operates a research base to examine the ruins of a lost civilization; scientists are studying it, conducting experiments they perhaps shouldn't be, and trying find out what happened. Answer: nothing good. That's what Sarge (The Rock) and his unit of high-tech Marines find out the hard way when they're sent to investigate a disturbance on the base--which turns out to be nothing less than an infestation of terrifying, evil, flesh-eating monsters. DOOM, based on one of the most popular video games of all time, knows exactly what it wants to do, and wastes no time in doing it. Andrzej Bartkowiak, the director of lean, effective action flicks like ROMEO MUST DIE and EXIT WOUNDS, gets right to the meat of the movie: marines versus monsters in dark, dank corridors. The Rock brings just the right balance of bad-ass attitude and deadpan humor to the role of Sarge, while the cast's other standout is Reaper (LORD OF THE RINGS' Karl Urban), who tries to repair his strained relationship with his sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike), one of the base's scientists. They're joined by a motley crew, including the twisted Portman, intensely religious Goat, affable Duke, and newbie The Kid. While the plot differs from that of the game in a few key ways, it remains true to the spirit of the original--a no-frills fest of shooting, explosions, gore, and vicious zombies. The game was, of course, a "first-person shooter," and in an inspired moment, the movie turns itself into one for a stretch. It's exhilarating, as are several surprising twists that separate this fun, streamlined action extravaganza from lesser video game adaptations.

2 stars Big disappointment
The makers of the movie should have spent more time playing the game. The game isn't a pure shoot-em-up. It's not pure fast action and blood and guts. Sure, these elements make for a kick butt game, but what sets Doom apart from other games of the same genre is the atmosphere. The game creeps you out, and does an excellent job of it. Sadly. the movie was almost void of this quality. No goosebumps or chills down my back like what the game would do. The movie is closer to the Resident Evil type adaptation. And closer to Resident Evil in general in the fact that the movie features creatures that come not from a portal to Hell, but from a genetic experiment gone wrong which infects those who are wounded by an infected. In my opinion this was the greatest disappointment of all. Doom is about creatures from Hell. It always has been. But I guess the makers of the movie decided that Resident Evil has a better scenario, so they ripped off the story from that game/movie and then twisted Doom into it's image. I would like to say that the action makes up for the rest of the disappointments, but the action is average. It's nothing special and, with one exception, isn't anything new. The only exception was the FPS perspective that it uses towards the end. It was a clever idea, but still didn't manage to impress. If you are a fan of the game, don't watch this movie on that basis alone. You'll end up angry and let down. This movie's only value is as a cheap action/horror flick. If you're one of those intellectual movie critics that appreciates those intangible elements of movies such as inspiration and emotional connections with the characters, then you should avoid this movie like the plague. But if you're looking for fast action and lots of explosions and gory effects, then have at it.

4 stars The Doom of the Rock.
Did this movie Doom his career? Maybe, maybe not. Doom writers could have left out some sleazy language. And a combo word that should have died with The Movie of the Shaft. You know the overused curse for everything when the character is trying to be super-bad. It's laughable to me. Childish. A Point of View sequence was good to see from the game, which I didn't see. A usual "bug hunt" movie. Could have been and Alien or any such generic creature as the bad guy. Not original but has its moments and worth the viewing.

THIS IS SCI FI FOLKS.....ANYTHING GOES....GET IT???...THIS IS A VIDEO GAME THAT HAS TO HAVE A PLOT CREATED WITH MORE CHARACTERS TO MAKE A GOOD SIDE STORY AND THEN HAS TO BROUGHT TO LIFE ON SCREEN WITH ELEMENTS OF THE GAME ITSELF....YOU SIMPLY CAN'T COME ON HERE AND EXPECT A "VIDEO GAME" TO JUST BE A MOVIE WITH THIS GREAT PLOT ALL OF A SUDDEN....THAT SEEMS TO BE WHAT HAS SPOILED WHAT USED TO BE A LOT OF GREAT ACTION SCI FI FANS HERE ON THESE REVIEWS...EVERY OTHER REVIEWER THAT BASHES THIS MOVIE IS JADED AND SPOILED AND SIMPLY HAS TO GET A GRIP ON WHAT MOVIE MAKING REALLY IS. WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO BE FLEXIBLE AS ACTION SCI FI FANS AND USE OUR IMAGINATIONS WHEN WE WATCH A MOVIE LIKE THIS OR ANY OTHER COMIC OR VIDEO GAME MOVIE.IT'S SIMPLY REDICULOUS...THE ROCK WAS GREAT AS SARGE AS WELL AS KARL URBAN AND THE REST OF THE CAST...I HAVE SEEN THIS MOVIE MANY TIMES AND ENJOY IT EVERYTIME I WATCH IT...I HOPE THEY MAKE A "QUAKE" MOVIE SOON BECAUSE I KNOW I WILL LIKE IT TOO BECAUSE ME AND OTHERS HERE WHO LIKED THIS MOVIE ARE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. Veteran slashers Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees join forces in this combination sequel to the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH series. The film begins with a quick recap of both Freddy and Jason's "lives," underscoring their respective motivations to kill and their distinct weaknesses. Freddy (Robert Englund) explains that the present children of Elm St. (including Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Katherine Isabelle, and Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child) have no memory of him, and if they don't know he exists, he can't enter their dreams to kill them. Ingeniously, he reaches out to Jason (Ken Kirzinger), the brutish death machine from Camp Crystal Lake, to go on an Elm Street killing spree, hoping a lot of gory murder will jog the town's memory. Jason is up to the task, quickly dispensing with teenager after teenager in suburban homes, cornfields, medical labs and, of course, the forest. Freddy grows jealous over Jason's body count, and so must intervene, setting off a battle royale between the two highly adored slasher heroes across dreamworlds and realities. In another post-modern twist, a character seemingly modeled after Jay from Kevin Smith's films appears in the movie, adding both a comedic element and another level of reality vs. fiction. FREDDY VS. JASON employs a variety of special effects to update these undying series, not the least of which is uniting their once disparate stories. This DVD feature film stars Monica Keena, Kelly Rowland, Jason Ritter, Christopher George Marquette, Lochlyn Munro and Robert Englund. Special DVD features in this 2-dvd set include 18 deleted scenes, alternate opening and ending, commentaries, interviews, production documentary, visual effects documentary, music video lots more.

This rock & roll/horror feature is based around the exploits of a Sunset Strip hair-metal band named Hollywood Roses. The band members kill lead singer Drake after their record label insists he be ousted from the lineup. But when Drake's girlfriend summons him back to life, the zombiefied singer decides to seek bloody revenge on those who cut his career short. In the tradition of ROCK AND ROLL NIGHTMARE, MONSTER DOGS and KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM comes the rock horror film, ATTITUDE FOR DESTRUCTION, an epic tale of Sunset Strip-era metal, murder and mayhem that critics are calling 'Freddy Krueger with a Stratocaster...a REAL appetite for destruction!' The GUNS N' ROSES-esque band HOLLYWOOD ROSES, fronted by vocalist DRAKE, is on the verge of superstardom, courting a major record deal with Diamond Star Records. One small problem - the label doesn't want Drake in the band. So, the remaining band members do what any fame-hungry performer would do - they kill Drake. But Drake's girlfriend has made a pact with the devil and brings her deceased lover back from the dead. Drake then goes on a slashing spree of blood and guts against all who have crossed him, leaving behind a horrific trail of gruesome gory revenge.
