On 1967's SILK & SOUL Nina Simone brings her blues- and jazz-steeped background to a set of more straightforward soul tunes. As usual, though, there is little straightforward about Simone's versatile delivery, which ranges from smooth, understated groovers (a nightclub-styled version of "The Look of Love") to bluesy, jazzy swing ("Go to Hell") to horn-driven R&B ("Why Must Your Love Well Be So Dry"). While the album may not be the best place for the Simone novice to begin, it includes plenty of excellent performances. After moving from the blues to soul for her second RCA album, Nina Simone's extroverted, confident delivery proved a natural match with the ranks of soul shouters working the crowds during the late '60s. A plane ticket to Memphis or Muscle Shoals could've resulted in one of Simone's best works; unfortunately, this set was recorded in New York, and it shows. Simone does well taking on Dusty Springfield for "The Look of Love," though the sedate supper-club backing doesn't quite jive with her smooth, studied performance. Better are the less familiar tunes, like the highlight "It Be's That Way Sometimes" (written by Simone's brother Sam Waymon), "Go to Hell," and "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free," a trio of songs Nina Simone has no trouble making her own. ~ John BushEntertainment Weekly (pp.p.68-69) - "SILK & SOUL captures Simone's many moods as well as any album does....With that earthy, masculine voice that sounded like dusk descending." -- Grade: A Nina Simone Silk & Soul Songs Silk & Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Exactly as the title says Nina Simone's 'SILK & SOUL' is a fine balance between her silky, feline, elegant ballads ("The Look of Love," "Cherish") and her groovy soul stompers ("It Be's That Way Sometime," "Some Say"). It's a delicious 30 minutes with tasteful arrangements encompassing horns, guitars, and woodwind, with Simone's chocolate voice communicating real emotion and power. The selections are flawless, but require repeated listening to reveal their true depths. Simone's own "Consummation" is a suitably melodramatic closer, and, from the excellent cover artwork down to the music itself, this is Nina Simone in her finest soulful strut. Spellman and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Out to Lunch stands as Eric Dolphy's magnum opus, an absolute pinnacle of avant-garde jazz in any form or era. Its rhythmic complexity was perhaps unrivaled since Dave Brubeck's Time Out, and its five Dolphy originals -- the jarring Monk tribute "Hat and Beard," the aptly titled "Something Sweet, Something Tender," the weirdly jaunty flute showcase "Gazzelloni," the militaristic title track, the drunken lurch of "Straight Up and Down" -- were a perfect balance of structured frameworks, carefully calibrated timbres, and ...
