Bittersweet album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply melded the two, but have created an entirely different form of music for the acoustic guitar in the process. It's infectious and accessible, full of pathos, intensity, passion, and color.

| | Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Ghanaian Blue 1968-81 CDs (2009)
Bittersweet CD music
$20.44 The U.K. label Soundway Records has vaulted itself to the head of the pack within the narrow field of African anthologies. They specialize in hard '60s and '70s funk, disco, and rock from West Africa, as heard on their Nigeria Special series as well as the earlier AFRO BABY and GHANA SOUNDZ sets, not to mention a disc devoted to the best-of Nigerian singer-guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. This volume, a two-CD set of funk and rock from Ghana all recorded between the late '60s and early '80s, is a churning sea of polyrhythms, chanted vocals, thick, distorted organ sounds, blaring horns, and scorching guitar that are equal parts James Brown and No Wave. A few songs ("Them Go Talk Of You," "I Go Die for You," "You Monopolize Me," "You Can Go") are sung in English, but most of the others will be incomprehensible to a U.S. listener -- and it won't matter one bit, because the rhythms and melodies are so overpowering ...

Bittersweet album
$16.89 In this 2001 revival of one of Broadway's most unlikely hit musicals, Ann-Margret assumed the Dolly Parton role of Miss Mona, the madam with a heart of gold. She proves perfectly suited to the role, with a powerful middle-aged country girl's voice and an appropriately knockout figure. The lively country score is competently performed by the entire cast, with the possible exception of Sheriff Dodd's solo "Good Old Girl." That song is sung by Gary Sandy, the former star of WKRP In Cincinnati, with a rather affected-sounding bass. But the main problem with the soundtrack is the musical itself. Carol Hall's songs are sometimes clever and often catchy, but when all is said and done, there really isn't a memorable show-stopper in the lot. And despite the racy subject matter, the show can come off as a didactic morality tale, albeit a sort of inverted one. It stacks the deck against its political and religious conservatives by portraying them as irredeemably buffoonish hypocrites while painting the prostitutes and their sympathists as uniformly good-hearted and gentle. But anyone looking for a grand ole time at the op'ry rather than a fully realized work of art is likely to be satisfied by this cast recording. ~ Evan Cater

| | Trojan Ska Revival Box Set CDs (2004) Remastered
Bittersweet CD music
$14.59 Entries in the Trojan Box Set series have bounced between "essential" and "purists only." Now Ska Revival comes along to screw it all up, greatly lowering the series' credibility. Despite the fact that none of the bands here were on Trojan proper, the label's influence on them was no doubt very heavy. The Specials and the Selecter were carrying on Trojan's spirit when the label wasn't, so maybe this collection isn't such a stretch after all. Bad news is that good old Receiver Records -- whose motto must be "Great Artists, Lesser Recordings" -- have gone back to their old ways and taken their latest acquisition, Trojan, down with them. The Specials, the Selecter, Bad Manners, and even the Special Beat tracks are live and often by later lineups of the bands. Worst of all, the limp Desmond Dekker tracks are from a poor 1995 team-up with what was left of the Specials. This could have been interesting and valid collection had all these tracks appeared in their original versions, not this hodgepodge of recordings that Receiver had already released on less prestigious compilations. The only thing the set has going for it is that it's the easiest -- and probably only -- way to hear the shambolic and rightfully forgotten Coventry Automatics. ~ David Jeffries

| | Bessie Smith Itinerary Of A Genius CD (2007)
Bittersweet CD music
$13.75 If you considered the total recorded output of Bessie Smith and tried to condense it into a single 22-track CD, you'd be hard-pressed to do a better selection job than on this premier release. The Milan and Ryko labels have collaborated, and done well, to reissue these songs which have otherwise been available in chronological extensia (check out the Classics label) from sources via the Columbia Records family vaults, and through comprehensive and expensive boxed sets. Each title speaks volumes -- "Downhearted Blues," "St. Louis Blues," "Cakewalkin' Babies from Home," "Yellow Dog Blues," "Backwater Blues," "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair," "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "Empty Bed Blues," "Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out," "On Revival Day," "I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl," and "Gimme a Pigfoot & a Bottle of Beer," -- all definitive classics, and a good bargain to find. 'Nuff said. ~ Michael G. Nastos
