| | Devin Townsend Addicted CD (2009)
Aggravation Of Mind songs
$13.09 Devin Townsend's maniacal/wacky tendencies duel with his instinct for skull-crushing heaviness on ADDICTED, the second in a planned trilogy of albums he's put together since retiring his ultimate metal band, Strapping Young Lad, a few years back. Anneke van Giersbergen, formerly of the Gathering, is Townsend's vocal partner throughout much of the album, creating a Lacuna Coil-esque effect as he roars and she croons and the guitar riffs ride almost disco- and techno-like rhythms. "Bend It Like Bender" is a particularly weird blend of metal and Hi-NRG, something Rammstein might come up with after a weekend of carousing in Berlin's most flamboyant discos. Other tracks, like "Supercrush" and the mostly acoustic ...

Aggravation Of Mind songs
$16.29 Jump 'n' Jive is a rather generic title for a two-CD compilation that does indeed feature two CDs' worth of music from 1944-1956 that straddled the lines between swing jazz, jump blues, and R&B, but is entirely taken from the vaults of one label, Savoy. So it's a rather narrower slice of jive than some other compilations of the style, but if you're specializing in the genre, it's a pretty good deep scoop from the holdings of one particular company. And Savoy did, during this time, record quite a few notable talents from throughout the jive spectrum: Big Joe Turner, Pete Johnson, Big Maybelle, Helen Humes, H-Bomb Ferguson, Tiny Bradshaw, Billy Wright, Gatemouth Moore, Doc Pomus, Nappy Brown, Jimmie Lunceford, Louis Prima, Slim Gaillard, Big Jay McNeely, Johnny Otis, Little Esther, and Jimmy Rushing are all represented by a cut or two here. While some of this is rather rote early R&B, there's much hot playing and witty vocalizing on these discs, with occasional items that are real top of the line, like Billy Eckstine's 1946 cover of Dizzy Gillespie's classic "Oop Bop Sh'Bam"; Big Maybelle's devious "That's a Pretty Good Love," which sounds like it might have been an influence on subsequent Ray Charles songs like "Hit the Road Jack"; Moore's seminal mid-'40s boogie "I Ain't Mad at You, Pretty Baby"; Gaillard's "Flat Foot Floogie"; and Babs Gonzales' wonderfully comic, semi-gravelly vocals on "The Boss Is Back." There are also a couple obscure early sides by Jackie Wilson (who did the 1952 ballad "The Rainy Day Blues" as Sonny Wilson) and LaVern Baker (who used the pseudonym Little Miss Sharecropper for her 1950 cut "I Want to Rock"). ~ Richie Unterberger
Capitalizing on the swing craze, Blue Note has issued this compilation that pulls from the vaults at Aladdin, Black & White, Blue Note and Capitol. This collection stands out from the pack, however, because of the seminal role that each of those labels played in the history of swing. Some of the greatest dance songs of the swing era are featured here, including hits from Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, Nat King Cole, and Jay McShann. ~ Stacia Proefrock
In the euphoric mood of postwar America, the clubs & bars of the big new industrial cities spawned suitably loud electric music to sustain the country's party atmosphere. The previously dominant Big Band format trimmed down to muscular small group size, driven along by boogie piano rhythms, powerhouse percussion & honking horn sections to provide the backdrop for the extrovert lead singers out front. Humour, too, was a key ingredient as hipsters brought their own cool take to the lyrics & the songs celebrated pleasure with wild exuberance. 40 tracks cover well-known Blues shouters Big Joe Turner & Big Maybelle, the screaming sax sounds of Big Jay McNeely & H-Bomb Ferguson, alongside less famous Jump ...
| | Dokken Erase The State CD (1999) DualDisc
Aggravation Of Mind album
$15.19 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Even though pop-metal heroes Dokken reunited in the 1990s, old habits refused to die for singer Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch, who still could not see eye to eye. Wishing to pursue a heavier musical direction, and feeling restricted by his old bandmates, Lynch once again left Dokken shortly after 1997's SHADOW LIFE. Instead of going on hiatus again as they once did in the late '80s, Dokken decided to soldier on, with ex-Winger guitarist Reb Beach taking Lynch's vacated spot. On the first Dokken album with Beach, 2000's ERASE THE SLATE, the music remains more straight-ahead than on Dokken's glossy '80s releases, but incorporates more melody into the mix than their later '90s efforts--check out the title track and "The Maddest Hatter" for the proof.
Hailed as the band's best album in years, this CD/DVD audio DualDisc stands out because ...

For this Latin pop superstar, a greatest hits album offers a chance to taste some of the sweetest fruits from the healthy vine that is the Shakira catalog of albums. Things kick off appropriately enough with "Estoy Aqui," which also opens Shakira's 1996 album PIES DESCALZOS. It's a powerful opener, and its mix of acoustic guitars, pop chorus, and ...
