For this lyrical LP reissue from 1988, altoist Phil Woods (who is joined by pianist Bob Corwin, bassist Sonny Dallas, and drummer Nick Stabulas) emphasizes ballads. He performs five standards (highlighted by "In Your Own Sweet Way," "I Love You," and "Like Someone in Love"), an obscurity, and two of his originals (including "Waltz for a Lovely Wife"). A tasteful, swinging, and boppish set, mostly played at slower tempos. ~ Scott Yanow
This CD focuses on Phil Woods' recordings from 1957; a decisive year in the career of the altoist - perhaps the most articulate exponent of contemporary hot, mainstream, hard bop, or you-name-it jazz - due to the formation of his celebrated quintet with Gene Quill. On the first eight tracks, Phil is showcased fronting his own quartet with pianist Bob Corwin, bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Nick Stabulas. In addition we have included as bonus tracks two other sessions recorded by the altoist the same year, with small groups performing standards and original compositions. Lonehill. 2005. Warm Woods music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most ...
| | Eric Alexander It's All In The Game CD (2006)
Warm Woods songs
$14.29 Over the dozen years since his debut recording as a leader, Eric Alexander has developed into one of the most important tenor saxophonists of his generation. Joined once again by one of his favorite pianists, Harold Mabern, along with bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth, Alexander kicks off this studio affair with a gritty hard bop treatment of "Where or When." "It's All in the Game" dates from the early part of the 20th century (written by future Vice President Charles Dawes), yet this is hardly a dated melody, as Alexander gives his best with a lush ballad treatment, while Mabern (who suggested ...
| | Phil Woods American Songbook CD (2006)
Warm Woods album
$14.39 Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they co-wrote the tune. Lynch's muted trumpet is a natural choice, but Charlap's extrapolation ...
