The debut album by Finnish hard rockers Sinamore is atypically poppy for the fairly hardcore metal label Napalm Records: A New Day sounds much more like '80s goth rockers like the Cult or Gene Loves Jezebel than the average Scandinavian black metal outfit. Singer/songwriter Mikko Heikkila has an oddly sweet and melodic tone that at times recalls Peter Murphy's baritone croon; even when he yells, as on the dramatic "Fallen," he doesn't venture into the guttural range that's the current metal standard. Similarly, the band favors relatively mellow mid-tempo arrangements and guitar tones that owe more to echoing, reverby post-punk (think of the Cure, and at times even Cocteau Twins) than more brutal forms of metal. A New Day isn't for the average Cannibal Corpse fan, but those who enjoy Nightwish and the so-called "darkwave" school of goth metal will find it quite appealing. ~ Stewart Mason

New Day
$12.15 In 2005, Novembers Doom made a giant aesthetic leap forward with The Pale Haunt Departure. It put their death metal roots even closer to subtle, multi-dimensional textures in a collection of songs that were not only memorable, but took the band to new levels in orchestrating vocalist Paul Kuhr's somber, often emotionally desperate lyrics. While it's true that the faithful engage in solid debate about the band's high watermark -- Pale Haunt or 2002's To Welcome the Fade -- with 2007's The Novella Reservoir it seems that ND have now laid down an unrelated trilogy of near brilliance in terms of evocative, musically and lyrically sophisticated heavy metal ...
| | White Lion Return Of The Pride CD (2008) Bonus Tracks
New Day
$12.59 The last time White Lion issued a new studio album, the musical world was a very different place. Hair metal was still en vogue, but its death knell was rapidly approaching (with the arrival of Nirvana). The group collapsed soon after the lukewarm reception bestowed upon the release of 1991's Mane Attraction, and remained in hibernation until the late '90s, until singer Mike Tramp began touring under a few different White Lion-related names (such as "Remembering White Lion" and "Tramp's White Lion") and issuing live albums. But 2008's Return of the Pride is the first post-1991 release to be credited solely to White Lion. Despite Tramp being the only member present from ...

| | Butterbeans & Susie Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1926-1927) CD (1997)
New Day
$13.25 In 1997 the Viennese Document label reissued the first 48 Okeh recordings made during the 1920s by the archetypal "Ma and Pa Vaudeville" blues duo Butterbeans & Susie. Since this came out at a time when Document was stubbornly refusing to employ noise reduction technology, sound quality varies from pretty good to good. Volume two covers the time period between March 1926 and September 1927. Most of these humorous numbers toy around with marital discord, often resorting to violent imagery that might seem startling even if it can be found in most every musical genre from Italian opera to hip-hop. What these songs speak to is the endless play between egos that characterize most human relationships, an interpersonal tug o' war that they manage to send up with a brusque and earthy humor that can and will grow on you. If Jodie "Butterbeans" Edwards' colorfully abusive threats raise a few eyebrows (especially during "Your Folks Will Start Wearing Black"), Susie Hawthorne seems to maintain the upper hand, especially with language like "You're a No 'Count Triflin' Man," "Let the Doorknob Hit You in the Back," "Daddy's Got the Mojo, But I Got the Say-So," and the very precise "Love Me and the World is Mine (Hit Me and the Jail is Yours)." Although most of these recordings were made in New York City, on June 18, 1926 Butterbeans & Susie cut two sides in Chicago; Lovie Austin is the pianist on "I Can't Do That," and Louis Armstrong's Hot Five are heard on the flip side, "He Likes It Slow." Other than that, all of ...

| | Polaris Small Place On Planet Earth CD (2004)
New Day
$9.49 Polaris - is New-Age/Classical music using sampled traditional instruments with a touch of Celtic in a few places. With Druid's Hill (tracks 1 through 7), I tried to evoke a Medieval-Ancient Celtic atmosphere using Guitar, Mandolin, Strings & Percussion. A Small Place (tracks 8 through 13), is my first attempt at an 'Orchestral' piece. The remainder (a mix of New Age & Classical) were complete pieces so I included them here. The advent of computer-based recording has finally allowed me to realize the music I have always heard in my head. These are all original compositions, but, in truth, its not me playing the instruments. I simply tell the computer what notes to play & on what instrument to play them. Don't get me wrong, I CAN play, just not very well. The genesis for some of these compositions goes back as far as the mid 70s, when as a young adult, I listened to Yes, Genesis & ELP along others. Having taught myself to play AT the piano, I was at once mesmerized and confounded by the majesty of those groups, utterly unable to play any of their stuff. I have seen all these bands live & was amazed at the musicianship on display.I started out as a drummer in a rock band, often teaching the guitar parts to our guitarist. He could play almost anything, but couldn't "hear" the notes. I could hear them just fine, but lacked the skill to play them. When I joined the Army the music took a back seat for a lot of years.I've carried a piano & minimoog all over the place at the whim of Uncle Sam, but practicing was never a priority, ...
