Whit Stillman's hit film is a sparkling comedic chronicle of a middle-class young man's romantic misadventures among New York City's debutante society. Christopher Eigeman, Taylor Nichols, and Carolyn Farina star. EXtras include audio commentary, outtakes and alternate casting, essay by Luc Sante, and more. Tom's a quiet, down-to-earth college student who usually keeps to himself. But when he's recruited by a group of debutantes (a wealthy clique short on male escorts for Yuletide season pageants) he winds up a regular deb date. Before long, Tom's tight with this haughty crew and finds himself fascinated by their erudite conversations, posh lifestyle and impeccable taste. A chronicle of the social scene of a group of young Park Avenue socialites and their vanishing debutante scene. Into thier midst comes an outsider, a radical from the socially alien west side. But, because of an escort shortage he is welcomed into their group by the dominant, arrogant leader and his charming girlfriend. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Original) Screenplay. Shot in New York at Christmastime "Metropolitan," first feature from writer-director Whit Stillman, played at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival.
Estimated budget: $500,000.
Stillman told reporters his film was vaguely autobiographical. Metropolitan Reviews: "...This just about perfect little picture...is a triumphant anomaly: a rude comedy of manners..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...Stillman has a disarming ace....[METROPOLITAN] engrosses and charms..." -- 3 out of 4 stars
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...A comedy of manners of a very high order....The actors are a uniformly engaging lot..."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "...Stillman's gift for quiet, scrupulous observation grows on you....Stillman is a pointillist, working in the tiniest, most meticulous degrees..."
-- Sheila Benson, Los Angeles Times "[T]his witty yet wistful dream of a film smartly zeroes in on the universal desire to belong." -- Grade: A-
-- Michelle Kung, Entertainment Weekly "Very well-written, affecting and often funny....With an almost sociological eye, Stillman explores the world of Manhattan's preppie debutantes and their escorts."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark condom, allowing him to engage in a condom duel with her jealous, similarly clad rock-star boyfriend. Eventually, Zach turns to fatherly bartender Barney (Vince Gardenia), who ...

$8.09 ASTOUNDING SHE-MONSTER - Edward D. Wood, Jr. served as "consultant" to first time director Ronnie Ashcroft for this Atomic Age cult classic. In it, a geologist living in the woods with his dog has his house taken over first by kidnappers holding an heiress and then by a voluptuous blonde alien in nylons and heels whose flying saucer crashed nearby. It turns out this visitor has arrived to bring a message to the geologist, as well as tempt him with her literally deadly body. A unique fusion of film noir and 1950s sci-fi cheese, THE ASTOUNDING SHE-MONSTER is an entertaining and frequently hilarious cult classic.
SHE DEMONS - A cruise party takes a wrong turn and find themselves on a remote island inhabited by a tribe of sexy, modestly-garbed She Demons. But they're not alone on the island. Prepare yourself for some Nazi agents, a mad scientist, ...

$10.05 Based on actual events, this black comedy/drama stars Nicholas Cage as international arms smuggler Uri Orlov. The story follows Uri from his humble beginnings as a Soviet immigrant in 1970s Brooklyn and peaks with his involvement in selling off the stockpiled arsenal of post-Cold War Ukraine to--among other top clients--the sadistic African dictator André Baptiste, Sr. (Eamonn Walker). Jared Leto costars as Uri's little brother Vitaly, whose conscience and a burgeoning cocaine problem get in the way of business. Ethan Hawke is good as a sanctimonious Interpol agent with a vendetta against Uri, but the film's biggest dose of onscreen gravitas comes from Walker, whose Baptiste seethes with a heavy, serpent-like malevolence. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film makes fine use of the brisk stream-of-consciousness narration style that Martin Scorcese brought to the true crime genre ...
