Pedro album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps that fine emotional tone throughout this set. Songs like the folk classic "500 Miles" feel at once both lovingly rendered and reborn for a new ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
Pedro CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained the best moments, ...
| | Avett Brothers I And Love And You CD (2009)
Pedro music CDs
$11.25 North Carolina sibling duo the Avett Brothers return in 2009, fresh off a few years of building a cult following for its melodic and rootsy alt-bluegrass sound, with the subdued I AND LOVE AND YOU. The opening single and title track basks in piano-pop splendor in an odd mix of Beach Boys, Byrds, and the Band.
The Avett Brothers continue charting the same musical course as EMOTIONALISM and MIGNONETTE on major-label debut I AND LOVE AND YOU, despite the presence of hands-on producer Rick Ruben. The country-folk duo continue to add elements of pop and hillbilly rock to a country/bluegrass foundation on the 2009 LP, a record with a newfound emphasis on piano and nuanced arrangements. Working with a larger budget allows the group to add small flourishes -- a cello line here, a keyboard crescendo there -- but the resulting music is rarely grand, focusing on textures rather than sheer volume. Scott and Seth Avett share vocals throughout the album, delivering their lyrics in a speak-sing cadence that sounds both tuneful and conversational. Given the opportunities presented here -- the ability to flank their melodies with string sections, organ swells, and Harmonium -- the two devote more focus ...
| | Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!: In Concert CDs (1970) With Book; With DVD; Anniversary Edition; Limited Edition
Pedro songs
$50.09 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."
Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pièce-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live Rolling Stones recording is the eight-minute-plus reading of "Midnight Rambler." Between Mick Jagger's unearthly ...

| | Alice In Chains Black Gives Way To Blue CD (2009) Limited Edition; Digipak
Pedro CD music
$14.39 When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent ...

| | 311 Evolver CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Pedro songs
$7.69 One of a plethora of long-lived bands to have realized the potential of a strong grassroots following, 311 had been pushing its particular amalgam of toke-friendly rock, funk, and rap for over a decade by EVOLVER's release. It finds the collective riding similar rhythms and mining similar lyrical veins to 2001's FROM CHAOS, the main difference being that this year's model sounds more confident and willing to take risks.
The lilting intro to "Crack the Code" presages a cruise through reggae, rap, and Californian punk rock influences, while "Beyond the Gray Sky" meanders soulfully ...
| | Doctor Jazz's Universal Remedy Release 1.0 CD (2004)
Pedro album
$11.09 Doctor Jazz's Universal Remedy is a somewhat misleading name for this group, whose music isn't jazz but rather, dance-oriented electronica (specifically, chillout and downtempo) with jazz overtones. Contrary to what jazz purists would have us believe, true jazz doesn't have to be totally acoustic, straight-ahead bop that is played in a '50s style; it does, however, need to be improvisation-minded, which is the thing that the Yellowjackets, James P. Johnson, Phil Woods and Ornette Coleman have in common -- and on Release 1.0, you're dealing with electronically programmed grooves rather than a constant stream of improvisation. But that doesn't mean that this 2004 release is without artistic merit; when Release 1.0 is judged by electronica and dance/club standards instead of jazz standards, it deserves enthusiastic applause. Like other Kriztal Entertainment releases that came out in 2004, Release 1.0 epitomizes the kinder and gentler side of electronica. Doctor Jazz's Universal Remedy doesn't get into harsh, abrasive techno; their grooves are sleek, sensuous and dreamy, and they have a highly appropriate lead vocalist in Miss Loulou (whose performances are expressive and soulful without being overly aggressive). Unfortunately, dance/club music is full of female vocalists who can't sing and sound like they're merely going through the motions, but that isn't a problem for Loulou; the capable singer has no problem getting her points across whether she's singing in English (the disc's primary language) or detouring into French on "Un Monde Sans Frime." ...
| | Soda Stereo Sueno Stereo CD (1995)
Pedro CD music
$10.49 Principally recorded at Supersonico, Argentina and Matrix, United Kingdom.
After a decade of recording music on Sonydiscos, the now-seminal Soda defected back to BMG and made a record unlike anything else up to that point in its discography. Whereas the group's initial sound was bright-eyed, restless pop that looked outward to the new wave for inspiration, SUENO STEREO is the sound of a band with years of songwriting and touring success that made the group strong enough to look inward for its creativity. It easily stands out as Soda Stereo's most mellow, slow-tempo production. Gustavo Cerati's slow, earthy guitar-based approach to the production melds beautifully with ethereal expanses of melodic electronica, strings, and organs.
"Ella Uso Mi Cabeza Como Un Revolver" is entrancing if a bit morose, with punchy chords, creeping arcs of cello and violin and a reverb-heavy Cerati singing vivid images of the emptiness of being used. "Disco Eterno" recalls the ...
| | Gebhard Ullmann Cut It Out CD (2006)
Pedro music CDs
$14.39 There are few avant-jazzers quite as prolific as reedman Gebhard Ullmann, who has released almost 40 albums as a leader and plans to release four more by early 2006 -- though you could argue that number of releases counts for less when your focus is on free improvisation. (After all, improv albums require notably less preparation than do composed ones, and, if you're a cynic, you might suspect that there's no such thing as a bad take anyway.) On Cut It Out, Ullmann is teamed up with bassist Chris Dahlgren (who makes various electronic contributions as well) and percussionist Jay Rosen. The session was recorded live to two-track in Dahlgren's living room, and the music stays primarily in the low registers. Ullmann limits himself to bass clarinet and bass flute, and combined with Dahlgren's growling, muttering basslines and Rosen's ...
