Personnel: Billy Martin (drums, percussion). Recording information: Houston Hall, Upenn, Philadelphia, PA (11/17/2002). Billy Martin's side projects have outnumbered his records with his best-known project, Medeski, Martin & Wood, and many of them have involved a fellow drummer, ex-Lounge Lizards percussionist Grant Calvin Weston. Live at Houston Hall is a recording of a 2002 duo performance in Philadelphia: a pair of drummers playing off of each other on trap kits, hand percussion, bells, gongs, whistles, and all manner of other noisemakers. As is usual with Martin, the groove remains paramount through most of this set of eight improvised pieces, with only occasional detours into free jazz-style atonal freak-outs. If the idea of eight lengthy percussion-only jams sounds absolutely unbearable, Live at Houston Hall will not do anything to change your mind. Those who collect Grateful Dead live boots solely for the drum duets, however, will find much to appreciate here. ~ Stewart MasonJazzTimes (p.125) - "Weston and Martin whip up a visceral, polyrhythmic storm. While they share a common vocabulary throughout, their most conversational encounter occurs on 'Talking Drums'..." Live At Houston Hall
$11.55 30 Classic Capitol & Reprise Hits On 1 CD.
Personnel: Dean Martin (vocals). Liner Note Authors: Dean Martin; Deana Martin; Steven Van Zandt; Gail Martin Downey. Dino: The Essential Dean Martin is an attempt by Capitol Records to fill up a single CD to the brim (30 tracks in nearly 78 minutes) with Dean Martin hits in the manner of the Beatles' 1. It's a welcome development from a label that was previously content to survey the same territory on the 1998 collection Greatest Hits: King of Cool, which contained only 16 tracks and ran less than 50 minutes. Martin put 36 recordings in the pop singles charts between 1949 and 1969, and 23 of them are found here. Of the four Top 40 hits not included, the most notable is the 1964 version of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." The collection does include the 1960 non-hit version of that song instead, a decision that probably was made to reduce the number of essentially similar arrangements heard on ...

Photographers: Lori Stoll; William Claxton. Arranger: Jorge Calandrelli. One of the greatest cultural blessings of the past century is the legacy of the popular song. No matter the passage of time or circumstance, the first few notes of a treasured standard has the power to set the heart soaring and the mind reflecting. An artist and musician whose personal resume is as stylistically expansive as his personal collection of influences, saxophonist Brandon Fields has, since the mid-1980s, built an impressive jazz discography upon an exciting blend of colorful originals and artful covers of be-bop and modern R&B classics. On the aptly titled Fields and Strings, Fields -- working with an orchestra led and contracted by his wife Gina Kronstadt and the magnificent arrangements of Grammy winner Jorge Calandrelli -- pays homage to a bygone era in modern music with new and inspired interpretations of 12 of his favorite all-time pieces. Not surprisingly, the project took shape as something of a family activity, with Mr. and Mrs. Fields ...
