In 1973 the great swing/Dixieland trumpeter Billy Butterfield recorded a set of duets with the equally great stride pianist Dick Wellstood. Both of the musicians were still in their prime, which was impressive considering that Butterfield had already been a major musician for 35 years. Duets can be difficult because there is nowhere to hide, but in this case it was an obvious joy for the musicians. Wellstood's strong, two-handed style would have made the inclusion of a bass, a rhythm guitar, and drums a bit of a frivolity, and Butterfield's iron chops meant that he did not get weary easily either. Their renditions of a dozen standards plus a second version of "It's a Wonderful World" are full of spontaneity, logical improvising, and exciting moments with plenty of sparks flying. University of Kentucky director of jazz studies Miles Osland continues to release albums featuring the various student jazz groups he has put together during his tenure at the school. On Dialogues, it's the University of Kentucky Jazz Ensemble playing with the same high standards that characterize Osland's earlier releases. As always, there is an imaginative play list featuring a standard or two, contemporary jazz music, an oddball piece, and some tunes penned by his students. Most of the tunes fall into the contemporary composer category with pieces by Bob Mintzer, Don Menza, Ernie Watts, Bill Holman, and other current jazz practitioners. One of the highlights of the album is the tender, expressive baritone sax of Don Steins on "Miss Ella," charted by big-band director Matt Catingub. Steins clearly has in mind becoming a member of the elite of contemporary big horn masters like Gary Smulyan, Nick Brignola, and Joe Temperley. Steins is also featured on "Perdido." Something called "Goober the Accursed" is a piece the Kentucky Marching Band used to play at football games. Osland has altered the tempo and the structure and done some other things, transforming it into an inventive piece for large jazz orchestra. Corey Lareau's tenor sax is prominent on this jazz piece cum march. Things really get exciting and slightly dissonant with Bob Florence's blasting "Tenors, Anyone?," with some steady tenor sax work by Lareau and Bryan Murray. The eccentric selection on the play list is "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," although "No Joy in Mudville" may also fit that bill. "Ball Game" is played ...

For many musicians, there comes a time when being a successful sideman isn't enough and a true artist with a unique voice emerges. With the release of this album, Kenny G's longtime percussionist finally emerged from the shadows and whipped up his own brand of melodic and aggressive smooth jazz. Gable and his band (named after their Seattle area code) show the kind of playful sensibilities which propelled the G man to the peak of the genre. Add to this the intensely grooving nature of Gable's playing style and elements of soul and funk deriving from his extensive background in these areas, and the result was one of 1993's best debuts. The collection is highlighted by performances by guitarist John Raymond (who also produced), keyboardist Bela Havasretti and Kenny G himself, who produced two tracks. "The Slip" sets the tone with a cool, funky groove and Raymond's tight electric lines being balanced with Gable's lush soundscaping. Kenny G's trademark soprano blends wonderfully with Gable's romantic vocal style on the seductive Quiet Storm ballad "Island Lady."
