All Riot
$11.85 Emery defines an extreme separation between their screaming and singing sides on Weak's End, their debut for Tooth & Nail. Opener "Walls," and the similarly-arranged "Ponytail Parades" do occasionally burst forth with hardcore-inspired screeching. But the louder, crazier moments are tightly regimented from the tracks' normal baroque and dreamy flow. The definition seems like a conscious effort to make a strong statement while still making accessible, emo-inflected music. Emery doesn't really make clear what that statement is; they prefer to suggest that it's there before drifting into opaque lyricisms that mull over personal pain and a general world-weariness. "By All Accounts [Today Was a Disaster]," "Fractions," and "Note From ...
| | My Chemical Romance Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge CD (2004)
All Riot
$9.95 For its major-label debut, My Chemical Romance amps up the melodies in transforming its unique hardcore approach to more of a pop-punk style. To say this Jersey quintet subscribes to the half-empty-glass outlook on love and relationships is like saying Johnny Rotten is a slightly irritable chap. Buried amid the abundant sing-along choruses and the tasty, two-guitar attack of fretburners Ray Toro and Frank Iero is doom-and-gloom imagery that ranges from the suicidal allusions of the soaring "Cemetery Drive" to the murder and firing squads of the insistent "Give 'Em Hell Kid." Frontman Gerard Way exudes ...

| | Alexisonfire Crisis CD (2006)
All Riot
$10.95 Sitting a head above their peers in the emo/post-hardcore scene of the 2000s, Alexisonfire get better with each release. Now a muscular force to be reckoned with, Crisis is the band's best album yet. The guys don't sound like an emo act trying to earn its tough-guy stripes through spastic freakouts or rubbing their vocal cords as raw as humanly possible. Instead, they fully embrace the glory of post-hardcore with aggression, passion, and a controlled intensity that pushes their playing, singing, and yes, screaming, to the limit, but not without direction or need. Chaos is in balance on Crisis, from the multi-vocalist dynamics and driving rhythms to the pummeling drumbeats and spiraling guitars. Even the "this is where we scream bloody murder and this is where we sing" components are seamlessly pieced together, building upon -- or bouncing off of -- one another without disjointed headache-inducing results. Vocals are much of what stands out, namely the power and maturity behind main vocalists George Pettit and Dallas Green's strong deliveries, while the ...

| | John Mellencamp Biography CD (1978)
All Riot
$15.15 A BIOGRAPHY contains Cougar's first hit, the punchy "I Need a Lover" (which Pat Benatar later covered; her version was also a Top 40 hit). With its piano-driven verses, shifting dynamics, twin lead guitars, layered production, and immediately memorable chorus, the song became a staple of rock radio, and hinted at Cougar's talent with pop anthems (a skill he would continue to refine through the '80s). The rest of the album shows Cougar finding his feet as a songwriter, yet singing with plenty of conviction while backed by a crack band. The 2005 reissue boasts remastered sound and the UK single version of "I Need a Lover."
Each Definitive Remaster will feature newly remastered sound, a rare or previously unreleased bonus track and upgraded packaging. Island Def Jam. 2005.
John Mellencamp's third album, A BIOGRAPHY, was his first record of all-original ...
