Personnel: Enrico Pieranunzi (piano); Hein Van De Geyn (double bass); André Ceccarelli (drums). Audio Mixer: Chris Weeda. Recording information: Le Duc Des Lombards, Paris, France (04/22/2001-04/24/2001). It is a tremendous challenge to find a fresh approach to standards and frequently performed jazz compositions. But pianist Enrico Pieranunzi is up to the task in this collection of live trio performances from 2001 in Paris. He is accompanied by two of Europe's finest musicians, bassist Hein Van de Geyn and drummer André Ceccarelli (who worked together in singer Dee Dee Bridgewater's band). The leader's take of "Body and Soul" includes a fluttering introduction and some dazzling Tatum-like runs. "I Hear a Rhapsody" is transformed into a daredevil post-bop anthem, while Van de Geyn introduces "I Fall in Love Too Easily" with a heartfelt solo. But the big surprise is their playful take of "Someday My Prince Will Come," which sounds more like a nightmare than a dream! Pieranunzi's off-centered arrangement of Wayne Shorter's modal masterpiece "Footprints" is full of tension, though his approach to Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" is fairly restrained. The leader contributed several originals, including the moody ballad "One Lone Star" and the more upbeat "Una Piccola Chiave Dorata." The support of the rhythm section is an essential ingredient throughout this highly recommended two-CD set. ~ Ken DrydenDown Beat (p.68) - "There's not a wasted not in the set, from the waterfall cascades on 'Body And Soul' through the haunting final tones of 'Autumn Leaves'." Fixing the rating to the correct 5 stars Wrote a previous review and mistakenly didn't tick off the 5 stars, which Pieranunzi's recording certainly is. So it' s fair to do a second entry to correct it. Submitted by schwager (Marin County, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pieranunzi nourishes brain cells Enrico Pieranunzi with Hein Van de Geyn and André Dédé Ceccarelli mean that contemporary music, and by that I mean the improvisational music of true jazz is flourishing in Paris. One of the aspects idolators of pop miss and therefor are targeted by, is the neutering that pop culture everywhere imposes. Pieranunzi and associates restores the verve and breathless guts we've known in American Jazz clubs and proves that the music has less to do with the continent you're on and more to do with the genius of the human nervous system flying at speed above the turbulence. My desert island collection grows with the addition of this disc. Submitted by schwager (Marin County, California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Live In Paris
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, ...
