(6 Customer Reviews)
Between 2003 and 2005, Rosanne Cash lost her father Johnny, stepmother June, and mother Vivian. The songs that populate BLACK CADILLAC are fueled by those losses; it's an elegiac album full of wistful longing for the departed. At the same time, Cash's music has gotten more adventurous with each album of her career, and BLACK CADILLAC is no exception; the looming bass line that drives the opening track, for instance, could have come off a Massive Attack album, and "Burn Down This Town" rides on cutting blues guitar riffs. There are a number of contemplative ballads, of course, but the sharpness of Cash's writing and the richness of her aesthetic keep things from ever getting maudlin.
Personnel: Rosanne Cash (vocals); John Leventhal (various instruments); Kevin Breit (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Michael Rhodes (bass instrument); Shawn Pelton, Charlie Drayton (drums); Catherine Russell (background vocals).
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Rolling Stone (p.60) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]t every turn -- high-mountain balladry, brassy R&B, near-metallic blues rock -- Rosanne sings of coming through loss with a poise and confessional will that are utterly country and absolutely in the family tradition." Entertainment Weekly (p.84) - "[T]he best of Cash's nuanced compositions, especially the luminous piano ballads 'I Was Watching You' and 'The World Unseen,' turns her healing process into great art." -- Grade: B+ Uncut (p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "BLACK CADILLAC is the most intense record of Cash's career. A meditation on life and identity as much as loss, her soul is laid bare..." Dirty Linen (p.49) - "Her intimate portraits offer a glimpse inside the Cash family circle, but just as compelling is her ability to articulate complex emotions in simple, artful, meaningful way Mojo (Publisher) (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Cash has fashioned a tear-stained, yet tasteful, requiem." Rosanne Cash Black Cadillac Songs Black Cadillac Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Emotionally powerful Forgive me, but I typically do not like country music. I was captivated by an interview that I read and felt compelled to listen Black Cadillac. I am amazed and deeply touched by the raw emotion and candid exposure. My favorites are, "I Was Watching You" and "The World Unseen." She provides us with thought provoking lyrics about God, church, family, and life and death. But we're not talkin' beer, bars, and bad times here. This is real, honest, and true. Don't miss out. Submitted by Rhonda (Saint Paul, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Black Cadillac
$11.29 RULES OF TRAVEL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Rosanne Cash started out at the vanguard of progressive country in the late '70s, but although you can't have deeper roots in country music than Johnny Cash's eldest child, she always had a broader vision in mind. Her definitive farewell to country came with 1993's THE WHEEL and she hasn't looked back since. Only one more album popped out in the 10 years between that career milestone and RULES OF TRAVEL, but it sounds like it was time well spent.
With country ever further behind her, Cash goes down a deep, dark, introspective singer/songwriter path via dusky songs simmering with hurt, regret, and ...

Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), ...

| | Tom Paxton Under American Skies CD (2001)
Black Cadillac
$12.15 Tom Paxton reunites with one-time collaborator Anne Hills for this album of largely political folk, which includes such evergreens as "Carry It On," "Birmingham Sunday" (about the racially motivated 1963 church bombing), "God Bless the Grass," and Paxton's own "Clarissa Jones." Also on the program are a few later compositions, most notably Tom Russell's "Manzanar," about the treatment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, and the title cut, a comment on the death penalty that represents the album's only songwriting collaboration by Paxton and Hills. The singing is impeccable and the songs are first-rate, but the performances are mostly so faithful to the originals that they don't add much. In addition, while the social commentary is balanced by an occasional love song, it would have helped to also sprinkle in some of the humor that Paxton employs so well on his solo albums; as is, this is pretty consistently somber stuff. Still, Paxton and Hills deserve plaudits for helping to keep the political folk genre alive; it's too bad that more writers aren't addressing the sorts of issues tackled here. ~ Jeff Burger
After more than 20 years of musical friendship sharing stages, studios and even membership in the same band, "Under American Skies" is the first full-length recorded collaboration between Tom Paxton and Anne Hills, two of the best songwriters and folk singers in the world. Their new CD on Appleseed Recordings was created with the dual intention of reviving some of the finest topical but timeless songs of the last four decades and capturing two great artists reveling in each other's voices, words and music."Under American Skies" was inspired by a conversation between Anne Hills and Appleseed Recordings president Jim Musselman at an outdoor folk festival a few years ago. Both were lamenting the fading status of meaningful ...
