Nobody Cries Forever album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen ...

| | Oscar Peterson Song Is You: The Best Of The Verve Songbooks CDs (1996)
Nobody Cries Forever music CDs
$18.75 Principally recorded in Los Angeles in 1952; Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California on December 7 and 10, 1953 and November 15-16, 1954; Universal Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois on July 21 and August 1, 1959. Includes liner notes by Richard Palmer.
Pianist Oscar Peterson has made a remarkable number of records through the years and his two songbook series for Verve (each recording features the songs of a different composer) were extensive, to say the least. During 1952-54 he cut ten albums (113 songs) and in 1959 he added nine more records (108 songs), in addition to his regular busy activities. Because ...
| | Byrds CD (1973)
Nobody Cries Forever songs
$9.69 The Byrds emerged in 1965 with one of the most identifiable sounds of the 1960s, and proceeded to evolve from folk-rock to psychedelia to country-rock. The Byrds were defunct by 1972, but re-grouped briefly in 1973, with all of its original members, to record one last album. BYRDS is in the country-steeped vein of the 1968 classic SWEETHEARTS OF THE RODEO, shimmering with chiming 12-string guitars and lush, multi-part harmonies. But while the signature sound is there, the album isn't on par with the band's classic material, namely because the songwriting is inconsistent (save Gene Clark's winning originals). Even so, the album belongs in any Byrds fanatic's collection, and is a suitable swan song from one of the era's most important bands.
In retrospect, the album the Byrds delivered in 1973 after reuniting the original members wasn't as bad as critics of the day thought it was, it ...

| | Bill Holt Dreamies 2006 Special Edition CD (2005) Special Edition
Nobody Cries Forever CD music
$9.95 Inspired by the aural collage of the Beatles' "Revolution Number 9," as well as the musique concrete of composers such as John Cage and Terry Riley and Bob Dylan's conscientious rock lyricism, Bill Holt quit his straight job in 1972 to follow his musical muse, hoarding various electronic gadgets and an acoustic guitar and holing up in his basement. He emerged a year later with Dreamies, one of the finest pieces of experimental pop from the era. Unlike the Beatles' White Album collage, though, the pair of sidelong, 26-minute epics -- "Program Ten" and "Program Eleven" (as if progressing directly from "Revolution Number 9") -- that Holt created were much more than symbolic representations of the chaotic times. At its heart, the album is a blend of folk and pop/rock, and in many respects, Dreamies fits in with the singer/songwriter scene that flowered in the early '70s. Instead of relying simply on the juxtapositions of his sound samples to impart subjective meanings, Holt composed lovely, downhearted melodies (very much recalling John Lennon) and trippy lyrics as a jumping-off point for each collage and then let acoustic guitar ...
