(1 Customer Review)
After building an impressive resume as a sideman, Puerto Rican-born, New York-based pianist Edsel Gomez makes his debut as a leader with the ambitious, intriguing CUBIST MUSIC. Based on the principles of Cubist paintings, Gomez's compositions insinuate themselves into the listener's ear with their repeated motifs, hypnotic rhythms, and imbricated structures. Gomez's approach may seem high-minded to fans of more mainstream jazz, but the music is still accessible, melodic, and highly engaging. Excellent playing from clarinetist Don Byron, saxophonist David Sanchez, and others (not to mention Gomez's exciting piano work), makes this a debut worth noting.

JazzTimes (p.76) - "All five reed players are especially sharp and focused, and indeed they often sound like they are working from smaller structural elements, creatively and intensively juxtaposed." $15.69 (MP3 Available for Download) What more could Latin jazz fans ask for, seriously? Not only are all the players just this side of top guns, they have been playing together in the same group for just shy of ten years. An all-star lineup and the genuine synergy that comes with regular collaboration do not happen often. When they do, well, it's clave magic. Pianist Edsel Gomez's playing is sly and intuitive. Bassist John Benítez, whose Descarga in New York could be one of the decade's most defining Latin jazz records, is strong and confident. Richie Flores is the genre's most underappreciated conguero, and his playing is typically incendiary. Robby Ameen is, of course, among the most in-demand drummers on the scene, and his playing is dazzling as always. Brian Lynch ...

Cubist Music album
$12.89 Trombonist Grachan Moncur III, who was a member of the Jazztet in the early 1960s, gained his greatest fame for his two Blue Note albums (Evolution and Some Other Stuff) which were quite adventurous. He also worked with Archie Shepp, became involved in free jazz and spent much of the 1970s ...

Cubist Music MP3 Album
$16.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in ...

Cubist Music songs
$9.69 (MP3 Available for Download) Using a sextet, upright bassist Holland sets the bar even higher than on his previous efforts, adding the always tasteful pianist Mulgrew Miller and a four-horn front line that is relentless. The jaunty opening number, "The Sum of All Parts," is a 5/4 African percussion-based piece led by Robin Eubanks with folded-in ...
| | Yusef Lateef Doctor Is In & Out CD (1976)
Cubist Music album
$9.89 (MP3 Available for Download) In 1976, Yusef Lateef's as restless a spiritual seeker as there ever was in the field of music, revisited some of his earliest themes in the context of modern sonic frameworks: The Eastern modal and melodic frameworks of his Prestige sides, such as Eastern Sounds, Cry!/Tender, and Other Sounds, brought to bear in much more sophisticated, complex, and grooved-out ways -- after all, it had been 20 years or more. The groove referred to is funk and soul. Funk itself was mutating at the time, so Lateef's interpolation at the crossroads of all ports in the musical journey was not only valid in 1976, but also necessary. For this recording, he utilized an absolutely huge group of musicians, bringing them in for this or that part, or a sound, or a particular vamp. Some of those present were Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Dom Um Romao, Al Foster, Billy Butler, Anthony Jackson, a ...
