Extreme Guitar Project
$15.65 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Byrne (guitar, synthesizer, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Brian Eno (guitar, synthesizer, bass guitar, drums, percussion); Tim Wright, Bill Laswell, Busta Cherry Jones (bass instrument); David Van Tieghem, Prairie Prince (drums, percussion); Chris Frantz, John Cooksey (drums); Jose Rossy (congas, agogo); Steve Scales (congas, percussion); Mingo Lewis (bata); Dennis Keeley (bodhran). A pioneering work for countless styles connected to electronics, ambience, and Third World music, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts expands on the fourth-world concepts of Hassell/Eno work with a whirlwind 45 minutes of worldbeat/funk-rock (with the combined talents of several percussionists and bassists, including Bill Laswell, Tim Wright, David van Tieghem, and Talking Heads' Chris Frantz) that's also heavy on the samples -- from radio talk-show hosts, Lebanese mountain singers, preachers, exorcism ceremonies, Muslim chanting, and Egyptian pop, among others. It's also light years away from the respectful, preservationist angles of previous generations' field recorders and folk song gatherers. The songs on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts present myriad elements from around the world in the same jumbled stew, without regard for race, creed, or color. As such, it's a tremendously prescient record for the future development of music during the 1980s and '90s. ~ John Bush Eno was a key figure in the development ...

Extreme Guitar Project
$12.69 Personnel: Joanna Newsom (vocals, harp); Joanna Newsom; Matt Cartsonis (banjo, mandolin); John Wittenberg, Cameron Patrick, Shari Zippert, Sharon Jackson, Edmund Stein, Gina Kronstadt, Vladimir Polimatidi, Julie Rogers, Peter Kent (violin); Caroline Buckman, Jessica van Velzen, Karen Elaine, Marda Todd, Miriam Mayer, David Stenske, Briana Bandy (viola); Giovna Clayton, Erika Duke-Kirkpartick (cello); Patricia Cloud, Susan Greenberg (flute); Van Dyke Parks (accordion); Peter Nevin, Jeff Driskill (clarinet); Phillip Fethar (oboe); John D Mitchell (bassoon); Robert O'Donnell, Jr. (trumpet); Terrence Schonig (marimba); Grant Geissman (electric guitar); Lee Sklar (electric bass); Don Heffington (percussion). Audio Mixer: Jim O'Rourke. Recording information: Entourage Studios, LA (12/2005-06/2006); The Village Recording Studio, LA (12/2005-06/2006). Arranger: Van Dyke Parks. It shouldn't be a surprise that an artist as stridently unconventional as Joanna Newsom would make a second album that overturns all the expectations established by her first. While Newsom's harp, highly poetic lyrics, and distinctive, child-like voice will be familiar to fans of THE MILK-EYED MENDER, YS takes Newsom's art in a new, startling directions. The quaint, self-contained folk portraits of the debut are obliterated here in favor of sprawling epics that recall sea shanties, Homeric myths, and progressive rock. Newsom's ...
| | David Byrne Knee Plays CD (1985) Bonus DVD
Extreme Guitar Project
$15.65 Talking Heads fans sometimes have mixed reactions to David Byrne's solo work, complaining that it lacks the quirkiness and edge of classic Heads material. Those fans will have reason to take notice of the 2007 CD release of THE KNEE PLAYS, Byrne's score for Robert Wilson's opera THE CIVIL WARS. Originally recorded in 1985, THE KNEE PLAYS was Byrne's second solo outing, following THE CATHERINE WHEEL (an instrumental score for a dance production) and preceding his Latin experiments on REI MOMO. Its position in his discography means THE KNEE PLAYS still bears the residue of Byrne's Heads aesthetic, namely in the spirit of its genre-mixing eclecticism. New Orleans brass band sounds form the skeleton of Byrne's score, with gospel, classical, and avant stylings mixed in. (Byrne provides wry, spoken word recitations for several pieces in the manner of Heads track "Seen and Not Seen".) Inventive and engaging throughout, THE KNEE PLAYS is a worthy addition to the Heads/Byrne catalogue. The CD release appends eight bonus tracks. For David Byrne, this was one of the last times he would write in the hyperobjective style that marked his work with Talking Heads up through Remain in Light and some of Speaking in Tongues. The occasion, the chance to write interludes -- or "knee plays" -- for a large scale Robert Wilson opera, The Civil Wars, called on this kind of approach, Wilson being as detached as Byrne. Musically, Byrne was strangely influenced by hearing the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and created these brass-led marches that sound like an art school has landed on Bourbon Street, though in places it is also reminiscent of a sunnier patch ...
