(2 Customer Reviews)
Whether invoked with admiration or derision, Kenny G. is a household name. But while the smooth jazz saxophonist may get under the skin of purists, his gentle, melodically focused playing has made him a mainstay of adult contemporary radio and one of the most popular instrumentalists of all time. THE ESSENTIAL KENNY G., a generous two-disc set, may be the best Kenny G. package on the market. It covers all of his hits ("Songbird"), appearances with guest stars ("We've Saved The Best For Last," with Smokey Robinson), holiday songs, and unusual covers (his version of, believe it or not, Outkast's "The Way You Move," performed with Earth, Wind, and Fire). Essential Kenny G songs
$15.15 Recorded between 1962 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian.
Skeeter Davis has had two phases of her career: the first as part of the duo, the Davis Sisters, with Betty Jack Davis (they weren't really sisters, by the way) in the pre-rock & roll era, and the second as a solo Nashville country crossover artist in the 1960s. The Davis Sisters recorded one bona fide classic, "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," which was a huge hit in 1953, and Skeeter mirrored it with a classic of her own in ...
| | Lynn Anderson Live From The Rose Garden CD (2005) Bonus DVD
Essential Kenny G album
$12.35 There's no recording date information and the general packaging is minimalist, to say the least; but this double-disc set -- one live CD and one DVD containing the video equivalent of the same show -- delivers where it counts, in the music. The sound is such that there's very little audience ambience, but there's plenty of presence for the band and even more so for Lynn Anderson, who is in excellent form throughout. The CD is great, but the DVD is even better, not only with an excellent visual ...

| | Blackbyrds CD (1974)
Essential Kenny G music CDs
$9.65 This amazing album is the product of six full-time Howard University students taking the direction of department head and jazz great Donald Byrd into the Fantasy Studios along with the aid of production wizard Larry Mizell. The result is some of the finest groove-oriented jazz music ever recorded. The rhythm section of Joe Hall on bass and Keith Killgo on drums provides a tight foundation for the Blackbyrds to enhance any dancefloor with their ...
| | Revere, Paul & The Raiders Something Happening CD (1968)
Essential Kenny G songs
$11.59 1968's SOMETHING HAPPENING is Paul Revere and the Raiders' SGT. PEPPER. Unlike most "concept albums" from this era, though, it actually holds up pretty well. There's not much of a heavy message to this album, although ...

$13.85 Joyner has been flying under commercial radar for several years, perfecting his poetic, introspective songcraft and quietly becoming one of the finer writers of the '90s. | | Dimitri From Paris After The Playboy Mansion CDs (2002)
Essential Kenny G CD music
$17.29 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Dimitri From Paris.
Despite emerging from the same fertile late-'90s Paris dance scene that spawned Mirwais, Air, and Daft Punk, Turkish-born Dimitri From Paris's influence can be traced to the late-'70s heyday of house music pioneer Larry Levan. AFTER THE PLAYBOY MANSION affirms this fact, its two CDs packed with a continuous stream of remade classics and vintage nuggets remixed by a who's who of dance music producers. Even though Dimitri tagged one CD "Laidback" and the other "Uplifting," both labels are misleading as all these cuts are packed with solid grooves that grab the listener up regardless of tempo.
Among the far-flung cuts featured on "Uplifting" are De La Soul's breezy, Iberian-flavored "(It Ain't) All Good" featuring Chaka Khan, the jazz flavors of Next Evidence's "The Body Theme," and Alexkid's chugging, Ibiza-flecked space-techno shuffle "Bienvenida." Other notable tracks include Dimitri's re-edit of the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" and Linda Clifford's high steppin' Shelter Club anthem "Changin'." The "Laidback" disc is equally compelling thanks to stellar remixes of Lil Louis, Maze, Les Nubians, and a classic Levan production of Gwen Guthrie's sweeping classic "Peanut Butter."
Keeping the Playboy Mansion concept rolling, Dimitri ...

| | Christy Doran Corporate Art CD (1992) (Import)
Essential Kenny G album
$15.09 This quartet date by guitarist Christy Doran, bassist Mark Helias, drummer Bobby Previte, and saxophonist Gary Thomas may have been recorded in Europe by Stefan Winter, but its feel is utterly New York. Doran's playing is far more on the jazz-rock than avant tip here, giving the entire proceeding a feeling of that beautiful, edgy walk between composition and improvisation. Thomas -- normally an outside player -- reins himself in as a soloist in order to focus on the sometimes wondrous ensemble playing at the heart of the disc. Each member of the band writes on this set and it's obvious that the groove comes from within. It's knotty, sometimes intense, and often ...
