Among a host of brash vocalists attempting to update Frank Sinatra's appeal for a younger, jazz-oriented audience during the late '50s and early '60s, Mark Murphy was virtually the only one with staying power. Part of the reason was his singing talent, but also his devotion to the jazz end of jazz vocals inured him to the changing times that would sink the rest of them. Except for a 1997 compilation, this DRG set is the first digital-era reissue of Murphy's Capitol recordings of the late '50s. The last two of his three LPs for the label, Mark Murphy's Hip Parade and Playing the Field were excellent recordings that benefited from Murphy's energy and precocious flair for singing jazz, as well as the arrangements of Kenton alumnus Bill Holman, one of the brightest modernists in jazz. (It certainly didn't hurt that Murphy also featured endorsements from two powerful members of the jazz cognoscenti, Steve Allen and Peggy Lee.) Whether recording with a small group or a larger band, performing standards as old as he was ("I Didn't Know About You," "But Not for Me") or songs ripped from the charts ("Lonely Town," "Venus," "Kansas City"), Murphy excels in any setting. [Contrary to the track listing on the back of the CD, the 12 songs from Playing the Field appear first, followed by Mark Murphy's Hip Parade.] ~ John Bush
The third of Mark Murphy's three Capitol LPs (all of which are long out of print) features the singer performing six songs apiece with an unidentified big band arranged by Bill Holman and an unknown trio; why was the personnel not listed? Murphy is swinging, already displaying an individual voice although the renditions are generally brief. Highlights include "Put the Blame on Mame," "Swinging on a Star," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "As Long As I Live." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Playing The Field/ Hip Parade CD music
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. Whether it be a major reworking of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" and Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," or such originals as "Woodrow" (for Woody Herman) and "The ...

| | Cal Tjader Plays, Mary Stallings Sings CD (1961)
Playing The Field/ Hip Parade songs
$9.85 CAL TJADER PLAYS/MARY STALLINGS SINGS is a noteworthy album in that it represents Mary Stallings's recording debut. Only 22 at the time, Stallings sings with a remarkable amount of conviction and control here, displaying the rich tone and heavy gospel influence that would mark all her work. Tjader leads a fine band through a set filled with standards and tunes by Fats Waller and Duke Ellington, and his cool-toned vibes add a shimmering atmosphere to the proceedings. The 2005 reissue boasts excellent remastered sound and two alternative takes from the session.
Mary Stallings was just 22 at the time this album, her first, was cut in 1961. Fortunately, she was teamed up with a group of top professionals led by vibist Cal ...
| | Jimmy Raney Featuring Bob Brookmeyer CD (1956) Remastered
Playing The Field/ Hip Parade album
$9.85 Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, it's this 1956 set that is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone -- another fine arranger in a soloist's role -- shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. One of the finest examples of the interplay between Raney and Brookmeyer occurs at the beginning of the album's second track, "How ...
