Elsewhere, the catalogs of American folkies were once again plundered -- Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" (in a distinctly Byrds-like arrangement) and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" (both done as solos by Chad Stuart) and Phil Ochs's "There But for Fortune" -- and there was an amusing comment on the history of Mersey beat, "The Girl Who Sang the Blues," which seemed to be about Cilla Black. Chad & Jeremy's first Columbia album was similar to their previous material (recorded for Ember in the U.K. and licensed by World Artists in the U.S.) in its light British Invasion pop/rock style with folky overtones. There wasn't anything here quite on the level of their previous big hits, "Yesterday's Gone" and "A Summer Song," though the orchestrated ballad "Before and After" would be their final Top 20 single. The album that preceded this release, RAGE FOR ORDER, came as a surprise to some fans because of the group's appropriation of electronic sound-generating techniques. Undeterred, the band composed its most challenging work yet, the epic concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME. Originally issued in 1988, the hard-edged album slowly worked its way up the charts and became the band's first gold-certified release (an opening slot on Def Leppard's sold-out HYSTERIA tour certainly didn't hurt, either). Love it or hate it, the Dear Hunter's Act II: The Meaning of, And All Things Regarding, Ms. Leading is certainly a grandiose project filled with ambition. The two act, isolation-themed rock opera is filled with intricate instrumentation and bipolar change-ups that recall Mr. Bungle's California or Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium with aspects of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise. The production is phenomenal, and the multi-layered songs feature unexpected dynamic changes, with parts dropping in and out with ease like a camera cutting from one scene to another. Soundscapes change drastically several times within a single number, turning from a guitar-based prog rock blazer to gritty Dixieland, then switching over to a cello and harp concerto.
