Multi-instrumentalist Karl Blau's first album for Washington State's K Records is a homespun affair, featuring Blau on horns, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. His songs are idiosyncratic, poppy, and insistently catchy. "Slow Down Joe" is a Zen-like song about taking a break on the highway, while "Ode to Ocean" builds a deceptively simple lyric around a hypnotic guitar figure, and "Ode to Demons" is similarly low-key. In its childlike simplicity, Blau's off-kilter musical and lyrical vision recalls the golden age of late-1960s British pop artists like Pete Ham and Keith West.
