Martin opens the record with "Til I Get To You," an expansive, mid-tempo number with a slinky verse that gives way to an epically dramatic chorus. From there he tries on urban contemporary dance tracks ("I Don't Care"), sweeping balladry (Diane Warren's "Stop Time Tonight"), stabs at reggaeton ("I Am"), and funky soul (the title track). Interestingly, by mixing rock, hip-hop, Latin flavors, contemporary R&B, and reggaeton--essentially, by covering every available base--Martin almost guarantees himself a hit on this slick collection of palatable contemporary pop.
Ricky Martin had some trouble recapturing the commercial success of his 1999 self-titled debut. After a disappointing follow-up and a bit of a hiatus, Martin released LIFE in 2005, a clear bid for commercial re-acceptance. LIFE teems with glossy, high-end production (especially the tracks helmed by Beyonce producer Scott Storch), star cameos (Fat Joe and members of Black Eyed Peas take turns on the mic), and a cornucopia of pop styles, all of which makes for an enjoyable, if somewhat uneven, listen.

In a music world beset by trends, Chicago rockers Lovehammers play a no-nonsense brand of heavy rock that's sure to satisfy back-to-basics headbangers. MURDER ON MY MIND combines the fierce edge of prime grunge (a la Soundgarden and Alice in Chains) and the melodic thunder of mainstream metal (parts of the album bear a resemblance to Metallica's more commercial offerings).
MURDER also mixes in elements of slinky 1970s hard rock and high-energy pop-punk, adding spice to the band's otherwise straightforward heaviness. "Better Off (Walk Away)," for example, has a rambunctious drive and an eminently hummable melody. Elsewhere, though--especially on melodic slow songs like "Say You're Sorry"--Lovehammers fit right in with radio-ready mid-2000s post-grunge and emo bands, proving that their commercial potential is just as powerful as their rock swagger.
Lovehammers have carved out their own space in the Chicago music scene by their hard work and dedication to their fans. Described as "The most Un-Pretentious Fuck-You Rock-N-Roll Band," this quartet has done their homework and is a breath of fresh air in this often-stale industry. Lovehammers have stepped up to put the spark back in modern rock and they've brought their welder's torches with them. It's about time a band has turned up with full guns drawn, ready to delve out some serious rock and roll without skimping on the sex and debauchery that grunge so foolishly discarded. Their latest release Murder on My Mind, which has independently sold over 8,000 copies, encapsulates the Lovehammers' arrival as an act that sweeps aside the mope for pure sweat and energy. Murder collects the best elements of grunge and hard rock with a twist of punk that stems from the pure adrenaline the band possesses. Singer Martin Casey has best been described as a cross between Mick Jagger and Axl Rose, while the Kourelis brothers man the rhythm section with a sex appeal that is reminiscent to the early days of rock-n-roll. At the same time, guitarist Billy Sawichik effortlessly rips through riffs and chords to complete this power quartet. Their latest sessions with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Bush, Pixies), allowed the band to feel and create their own sound. Finnish sword-wielding berserkers Turisas cemented their name within the hallowed halls of the Viking metal scene in 2004 with the seminal Battle Metal, creating an entire subgenre fueled by what can only be described as "over the top everything." Churning out records to accompany muted viewings of 300 or the Lord of the Rings trilogy is nothing new (Manowar has been it doing it for years), but on the ambitious Varangian Way the group takes it one step further, creating its own unique narrative. Built around the epic journey of a group of traders, mercenaries, and pirates ("Varangians") exploring trade routes between their 9th century homeland and Constantinople, Varangian Way is infinitely more cinematic in scope than Battle Metal, employing narration, accordions, and massive choirs (the group still relies on main man Warlord Nygård's tasteful keyboard work for the orchestral bits) to move the story along. The rousing "To Holmgard and Beyond" sets the pace, taking the Battle Metal formula of brass lead, group vocals, and crushing guitars to the next level.
