Rilo Kiley's Blake Sennett crafted an introspective yet sophisticated set of songs while on tour with his main band. SUN, SUN SUN is full of gently acoustic compositions like "It Was Love" and "The Bank and Trust" that seem to have their origins in road adventures, though they're less maudlin and more cold-eyed, analytical, and knowing than many similar compositions by musicians stuck on the rock & roll treadmill. Though his lyrics are often tinged with ennui, Sennett frequently works some entertaining musical mischief, notably with the angelic backing vocals of "I'll Be Your Man" and the fake R&B of "Did Me Good," making SUN, SUN, SUN perhaps the only album of road songs you'll ever need.

Rolling Stone (p.67) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Fireflies in a Steel Mill' is a gorgeous indie-boy lullaby with bouncy horns making a nice old-school filigree..." Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "With its airy harmonies, nature narrative, and weeping slide guitars, SUN is the sound of a kid with his feet on Hollywood Boulevard and his head in the Sierras." -- Grade: B+ Uncut (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "With its tiered harmonies, soft-echo guitar and carefree shuffle, there's a distinctly mellow vibe to these Cali-pop songs that suggests John Sebastian fronting The Eagles." Magnet (p.94) - "[S]unny, twangy pop occasionally colored by bright horns....Sennett teeters between precious and wild." | | Elected Me First CD (2004)
Sun, Sun, Sun CD music
$11.59 The Elected's debut album, Me First, is the sunny rays of Los Angeles by the way of Nebraskan solitude. While it may be a kind album on the surface, issues of faded childhood dreams and memories and disappointments of the family line allow self-indulgence to be OK. In fact, it's well overdue for those overachieving people-pleasers who feel defeated, yet hold a spark for a smile. Rilo Kiley multi-instrumentalists Blake Sennett and Jason Boesel are playful throughout the quirky storylines of Me First, and both seem more confident in embracing their love for country music. Rilo Kiley's second album, The Execution of All Things, had a difficult time deciding its country fate; however, the Elected use it sparingly ("Waves") with electronic bits, and avoid Rilo Kiley comparisons in the process. A soft harmonica on the hushing waltz "Greetings in Braille" sets the haunting tone of Me First. Backing vocals and a rousing chorus by Azure Ray's Orenda Fink and ...
| | Rilo Kiley More Adventurous CD (2004)
Sun, Sun, Sun music CDs
$9.99 Mellotron and Moog add a melancholy air to the heartbreak-defining "Does He Love You?," and "I Never" hints at Rilo Kiley's country side via Lewis's aching, Loretta Lynn-like phrasing and the atmospheric blending of strings and pedal steel. This adventurous musical outing leaves room for Blake Sennett's lo-fi, solo acoustic tune "Ripchord," the Blondie-esque "Portions for Foxes," and "Love and War (11/11/46)," a New Wave-like rocker inspired by ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Sun, Sun, Sun songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst ...

Sun, Sun, Sun album
$10.39 SOS JFK is the full-length debut from the Children's Hour, an effort rich in contemporary folk stylings and indie rock sensibility. Josephine Foster and Andy Bar are earnest in keeping things simple, basically picking up where their self-titled EP left off for a wistful set of melodies. Vocally and musically, the pair isn't overly ambitious. SOS JFK is appealing because its basic folk -- ...
