| | Fall of the Leafe Vantage CD - Import Fall of the Leafe Discography of CDs
Lyrically Vantage takes a grip of things with pieces of short prose. The wrongs, the rights, and everything in between, and how things just don't connect right. Vantage often reads like a very direct storyline or monologue more than anything. Like it's predecessor, the album also features ethereal writings of Jessica Cerrato. Firebox. 2006. | | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Vantage CD music
$14.04 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in ...
| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Vantage music CDs
$13.15 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic ...

| | Heavy Metal CD (1981) Original Soundtrack
Vantage album
$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two. Most songs are exclusive to this soundtrack. The best-known song here is Journey's ballad "Open Arms." Blue Oyster Cult's darkly menacing "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a haunting gem. Devo's quirky, new ...

Vantage songs
$16.09 Arve Henriksen's first solo CD takes its title from an 11th century Japanese treatise on garden planning. Knowing the care these people put in the conception of their gardens to achieve a perfect level of beauty and balance, one expects something more zen than usual from the Supersilent trumpeter. Well, there are no disappointments in sight. Sakuteiki turns out to be the delicate origami flower its title promised. Recorded in various churches selected for their acoustical properties, the pieces all favor sparse arrangements, acoustic sounds, and an esthetic of open space. The trumpet wails at the stone walls, the ...

| | Sly & Robbie Anniversary CD (2007)
Vantage songs
$13.65 Although it was released two years after Sly & Robbie celebrated their Taxi label's 25th anniversary with a worldwide tour, the 2007 release Anniversary must have originally been planned to cash in on the festivities, since it's hard to find another reason for this baffling collection. First of all, tracks come from the late '80s and onward, but there are no dates or sources given in the liner notes, something that would have been helpful seeing how some of these cuts come from the fringe of Sly & Robbie's discography. Second, there are some misleading titles and a couple of doubtful credits. For instance, "Bread Man Shuffle" is better known as "Live It Up," and usually comes with the aka "Beardman Shuffle" (see 1997's Mambo Taxi album). Even stranger is that "Viva Tirado" is credited to its composer, jazz legend Gerald Wilson, when it was originally credited to the Taxi Gang, and Wilson sure doesn't seem to be playing on the cut. As far as the music itself, there's the classic instrumental "Unmetered Taxi," which provided the riddim for Buju Banton's massive hit "Driver A." Then there's the seductive "Good Love" from sweet siren and sometimes actress Cherine Anderson. Both "Fire in the Oven" and "Ticket to Ride" with post-disco diva Gwen Guthrie do a good job of representing Sly & Robbie's love of crossover dancefloor material. "Crazy Bald Head" combines Beenie Man, Luciano, and a Bob Marley sample for a crucial tune, and "Rasta Fiesta" is a punched-up version of Jacob Miller's "Baby I Love You So" with plenty of echo and the kind of fat, solid foundation that has made this rhythm section a reggae favorite. There's great music here, no doubt about it, but don't expect any context to be provided by this scattershot collection. ~ David Jeffries
