Lust For Heaven album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in ...
| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
Lust For Heaven CD music
$13.69 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. ...

| | Anvil This Is Thirteen CD (2009) Bonus Track
Lust For Heaven album
$12.45 While Anvil never really got the chance to make a bid for mainstream success, and it's too late now -- they've got an affectionate documentary about themselves, the success of which has gotten them a deal to release this album, but the industry just doesn't make stars anymore, certainly not in metal. The best Anvil can hope for is that they'll be able to go out (or carry on for a few more years, if they choose to do so) with some self-respect. Luckily, THIS IS THIRTEEN is more than good enough to achieve that goal. The production by Chris Tsangarides, who worked with the band in the early '80s, showcases their still impressive instrumental skills, and while the lyrics range between functional and boneheaded, Steve "Lips" Kudlow's voice is powerful, reminiscent of Ian Gillan on the more midtempo material and Suicidal Tendencies' Mike Muir on the thrashier tracks. Most of the songs on THIS IS THIRTEEN are in more of a traditional ...
| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Lust For Heaven CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate mainstream perfectionists, revitalizing progressive rock to the grandeur of its '70s heyday, but updated with technocratic tension and existential dread not known to previous generations. Perhaps it's the development of more musical genres at the turn of the millennium, but it's also Tool's ability to take what is needed from each and leave the florid excesses behind, forming a seething gray core of angst and release across epic-length songs that are as accessible as they are complex. The material on 10,000 DAYS provides typically thought-provoking grist for the band's lyrical handwringing ...

Lust For Heaven music CDs
$18.65 A bank heist, a dead bride, the Mayor crashing her car into the local bowling alley, a farm girl hitch-hiking to New York City and a fellow who just won't quit trying to off himself. What do these sordid characters have in common?Ladies & gentlemen, I give you to the characters of "Swagger", the first solo album by Toronto's queen of acoustic bop, Erin Smith. After many years of touring, recording and fronting the popular funk outfit named for its lead singer (Erin Smith Band), Smith has stepped out on her own to reveal a pocketful of gems she has written over the past year. Tiring of writing music strictly designed for the funk-soul crowd, Smith began to envision an album that would be a mixed bag of creaky jazz ballads, tin-pan alley show tunes, solid pop and a healthy dose of the funk-soul people know and love. After visiting several studios and producers, Smith chose to record with Hamilton musician Michael Birthelmer at his Chatham Garden Studio. Known for his stunning Civil War songs, Birthelmer seemed like the perfect match to achieve the raw and rusty vibe that Smith was looking for. The results speak for themselves. Featuring appearances by Melissa McClelland, Janine Stoll and Lisa Winn (Erin's band mates in the Ladybird Sideshow), duet performances with Johan Hultqvist of Toronto afrobeat orchestra Mr. Something Something and stand-up bass, clarinet & saxophone parts by Liam Smith and John MacLean (of the Erin Smith Band), Erin could not ...
