Hanoi Rocks was one of the few '80s-era glam acts to get it right -- basing their sound/approach on the New York Dolls rather than Van Halen. Although singer Michael Monroe found it impossible to carry on with the band after the death of drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley, by the early 21st century he must have had a change of heart. Once more, Monroe was united with guitarist Andy McCoy -- releasing Twelve Shots on the Rocks in 2002 and committing to live dates. The reunion obviously went well, because in 2005 the "new Hanoi Rocks" was ready to issue another studio effort, Another Hostile Takeover. Despite none of the other former Hanoi members being included, Monroe and McCoy have no problem re-creating the trashy glam punk of their earlier releases here, as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening "Back in Yer Face." Surprisingly, on tracks like "The Devil in You," the group assumes a radio-friendly sound, which is sure to leave longtime fans a bit bewildered. That said, two covers that Monroe/McCoy tackle -- Phil Lynott's "Dear Miss Lonely Hearts" and Stiv Bators' "No Compromise, No Regrets" -- fare much better. Another Hostile Takeover doesn't scale the same heights as, say, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, but there are enough links back to the old-time Hanoi Rocks sound for longtime fans to latch onto. ~ Greg Prato
The Finnish legends return with a new ball-breaking CD which looks likely to see them regain their Glam Metal Crown. Joining the new shape H.R. is ex-Electric Boys members Connie Bloom (Guitar's) and Andy 'A.C.' Christell (bass). Michael Monroe's vocals have never sounded better, and together with Andy Mccoy's guitar wizardry and Lacu's solid drumming, that unmistakable Hamoi sound has achieved new heights. Another Hostile Takeover album
$12.65 While Limp Bizkit scrambled to find a replacement guitarist for the vacancy left by Wes Borland, mastermind Fred Durst found a way to breathe new life into selected tracks from the band's canon. NEW OLD SONGS reads like a who's who of 2001's hottest DJ's. "Nookie" sounds funkier and possibly more compelling than the original, as manipulated by The Neptunes, while Timbaland puts a fresh spin on "Take a Look Around" with hip-hop help from MC's E-40 and Eightball. Limp Bizkit's own man behind the turntables (DJ Lethal) takes center stage with his cut-up version of "Break Stuff." Xzibit checks in with DJ Premier on "Getcha Groove On," while Durst tries his own hand at remixing with guest vocals by Everlast on "Faith/Fame." NEW OLD SONGS is a great introduction for hip-hop fans that find rap metal a bit hard to swallow, as these well produced remixes simultaneously appease hungry Bizkit fans.
New Old Songs is the remix album from rap-rock superstars Limp Bizkit. The band gets a lot of criticism, some deserved and some not, for their songwriting skills. But as this album proves, they actually have a very solid formula that does not survive remixes well. Limp Bizkit does not accentuate their strong points through these remixes, which results in cute but meaningless shells of the original. The only thing that survives in most of these new mixes is Fred Durst's voice, which is without a doubt the most recognizable element of the group. But that means nothing when the music that puts across his point is taken away and replaced with rap beats. For example, the group's resident turntablist DJ Lethal has three remixes on the album. In each remix, he virtually eliminates all the music in exchange for generic hip-hop beats that make Durst's shaky lyrics sound that much worse. Even in his supposed "Lethal Dose Extreme Guitar Mix" of "Counterfeit," he only keeps a little of the original chugging guitar. ...
