Nechville: Acustico - Ao Vivo, Vol. 1 video
$10.79 The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. It's a hard combination to beat.
Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, ...
| | Trio Da Paz Somewhere CD (2005)
Nechville: Acustico - Ao Vivo, Vol. 1 film
$13.49 The well-traveled musicians who make up Trio da Paz (guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta, and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca) have eclectic tastes that range well beyond their native Brazil -- and they choose to exercise them without restraint on this album. Starting out with Miles Davis' "Seven Step to Heaven," the trio swings back and forth between Brazil and the U.S. without a care, filtering almost everything through the bossa nova and samba idioms. The Grover Washington, Jr. hit "Winelight" takes very well to a medium-tempo bossa nova treatment. Even, so help us, "Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead" is within their range, transformed into a swift samba. However Trio da Paz give Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" a straightforward, American pop standard rhythm, perhaps because they couldn't figure out how to Brazilian-ize it, and the off-kilter three-quarter meter take on the five-four meter "Take Five" nearly stumbles on itself. Among the Brazilian-made tunes, there is some exquisite out-of-the-way Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Look to the Sky") as well as standard-issue Jobim ("Corcovado"), rapid-fire Baden Powell in "Babel (Samba Novo)" and "O Astronauta," and a marvelous treatment of Durval Ferreira's "Batida ...
| | Baden Powell Seresta Brasileira CD (1988)
Nechville: Acustico - Ao Vivo, Vol. 1 review
$12.35 An excellent Brazilian guitarist, Baden Powell has played with his share of American jazz greats (including Herbie Mann and the late Stan Getz). But there's no jazz to be found on Seresta Brasiliera, which was recorded for the Brazilian Caju Music label in 1988 and released in the U.S. on Milestone/Fantasy in 1994. The title Seresta ...
| | Le Monde Musical De Baden Powell CD (2003)
Nechville: Acustico - Ao Vivo, Vol. 1 DVD
$14.49 When it was originally released in 1964, this set of music was a bit of a hit, selling over 100,000 copies. Brazilian guitarist-composer Baden Powell was working regularly in France at the time and he is joined on various selections by a French rhythm section and an orchestra. There are also some unaccompanied guitar solos. Listened to over four decades later, much of the music comes across as being overly sweet, safe and sleepy. Powell plays well enough, but the lack of mood variation and the unimaginative arrangements are unfortunate. Since the guitarist rarely gets beyond the melody, the overall results are pleasant background music, nice but predictable. [Universal reissued Le Monde Musical de Baden Powell on CD in 2005.] ~ Scott Yanow
In the early '60s when many Brazilian musicians brought bossa nova to the United States, classically trained guitarist Baden Powell took his guitar to France. Hence, the rest is history, as this Brazilian artist infused his hybrid jazz/classical/bossa nova articulations into the European scene. This program chronicles the work he did for the Barclay (CD one) and Festival (CD two) record companies, spanning the mid-'60s through the ...

Nechville: Acustico - Ao Vivo, Vol. 1 movie DVD
$36.29 Japanese import includes the bonus cover "Up, Up and Away," originally done by the 5th Dimension.
For her second studio album, Bebel Gilberto largely forgoes the electronic tinges of TANTO TIEMPO, in favor of a more straight-ahead bossa nova sound that often evokes the music of her father, the legendary vocalist/guitarist Joao Gilberto. On the breezy opener, "Baby," Gilberto lovingly adopts some ...
