| | Gene Ammons 1951-1953 CD Gene Ammons Discography of CDs
This CHRONOLOGICAL CLASSICS set features some of the early recordings by the great tenor sax player Gene Ammons. While Ammons would later move in more experimental directions, his early albums, most notably those for Prestige, fell into a smooth, swinging bebop mode that showed the heavy influence of Charlie Parker. The music is very much of its era, but Ammons's full, earthy sax tone is heard to fine effect on these sides, making 1951-1953 a compelling portrait of the artist as a young man.
This CD contains a rousing performance much in the style as the tracks Ammons had cut with his father for Mercury a few years before. "Echo Chamber Blues" with its eerie sound is not entirely convincing, but such audio experiments were not unusual at the

1951-1953 album
$12.29 Conte Candoli (trumpet); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Emil Richards (marimba); Keith Mitchell (bass); Earl Palmer, Stan Levey (drums).
Originally released on Reprise (6019), Reprise (6049) & Reprise (6073).
This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling of Henry Mancini's music from the classic Blake Edwards film with Audrey ...
| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
1951-1953 CD music
$11.19 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was ...

1951-1953 CD music
$15.65 All songs written or co-written by Gerald Veasley or Mark Knox except "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" (Michele Legrand/Alan Berman/Marilyn Bergman).
The key to success for any sideman who takes the plunge into the realm of solo artistry is finding a unique voice on his chosen instrument. For Gerald Veasley -- a veteran ensemble player who has graced the music of everyone from Grover Washington, Jr. to Joe Zawinal and Special EFX -- combining his skilled approach on the six-string electric bass with a background full of every color of jazz and R&B has led him to the forefront of modern bass players. If his 1992 debut found him looking ahead to an artistic expansion of sorts, the beefy bounce and heart-rending cool of Signs points the way towards the place where growth meets commercialism and soul joins lightheartedness. Veasley's tight grip on the very harmonious possibilities of the six-string ...
