This excellent Lowell Fulson compilation, an installment in Classics' CHRONOLOGICAL series, offers up an impressive selection of the blues/R&B vocalist/guitarist's late-1940s/early-'50s material. Arranged in chronological order--naturally--the set finds Fulson performing songs such as the swooning "Ain't Nobody's Business," the rollicking "Baby Won't You Jump with Me," and the fiery "Guitar Shuffle," revealing his vibrant sound's kinship with early rock & roll.
This CD, the 4th in the series, witnesses the fortuitous pairing of Lowell Fulson with ace arranger and pianist Lloyd Glenn. After suffering a string of accompanists from the limited Eldridge McCarty through to the over-qualified Jay McShann, Fulson now Lowell Fulson 1949-1951 Songs | 1. | Hearted Woman | |

| | Solomon Burke That's Heavy Baby 1971-1973 CD (2005) (Import) Australia
1949-1951 music CDs
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, multi-layered background vocals (a la Marvin Gaye), and deep vocals not unlike Barry White, Burke created, over three albums, some of his most powerful, distinctive and important work. This 22-track compilation culls the essence of Burke's MGM albums and includes three rare non-LP tracks.

1949-1951 music CDs
$9.29 After GUMBO, his album of classic New Orleans covers, Dr. John released IN THE RIGHT PLACE, his finest set of original funk to date. Perhaps inspired by his exploration of some of New Orleans' finest writers and musicians on the prior release, these tunes bristle with sassy confidence and mysteriously hypnotic grooves. The good Doctor is backed throughout by the Crescent City's own preeminent funk quartet, The Meters.

| | Little Mack Simmons Somewhere On Down The Line CD (1999)
1949-1951 songs
$13.85 While there's little startling about this 1999 collection of predominantly acoustic covers from the Chicago harpist/vocalist, the band and Simmons consistently find a low-key groove that's intoxicating. Simmons sings with easy authority, a sort of less lascivious Sonny Boy ...
