There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption ...

Dub Fever CD music
$13.39 The Sabians wasted little time preparing a follow-up to 2002's very impressive Beauty for Ashes, and it's good to note that the resulting Shiver more than measures up to prior expectations. Bursting out of the gate with its surprisingly forceful guitar riff, opener "Sixteen-Forty" is amazingly compact and immediate as compared to its predecessor's more often tempered and contemplative "torch-ure songs." But for those of you who found such dynamic temperance to be at the very heart of the Sabians' ...

| | Mixed Review CD (2005)
Dub Fever songs
$18.95 "The Mixed Review" began in 1997 as a gathering of like minded musicians searching for a common thread. Starting as a campfire, song circle, guitar swap, songwriter's-in-the-round, mini-festival or jam session, the name came as a "what to call 'it.'" Evolving from picking on the porch to a gig request, when asked what their band name was "it" stuck. Now "the group" includes a band sometimes numbering as many as 10 to 12 players. The latest result of which is their first self-titled CD. Recorded at the widely acclaimed Loma Ranch Studios in Fredricksburg, Texas (Hal Ketchum, Eric Taylor, Nancy Griffith...) their debut CD is an eclectic hybrid mixture of obscure covers and originals. Considered alt country/americana/bohemian/rockbluesfolkjazz, their variety of songs and voice deliver a pleasing result to young and old. From tear jerkin' to foot stompin,' several covers are recognizable from Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home," The Band's "The Weight" to the much requested "Gospel Medley," as well as several unrecognizable covers and originals receiving regional and national acclaims (i.e.:"Texas Mud," American Songwriter Magazine 3/04). While this release has been long awaited by their following, "The Mixed Review" won't soon forget its roots. Hosting a "2nd Friday" live music night, in Huntsville, Texas for 4 and half years now, "The Mixed Review" mixes it up with other area and regional singer-songwriters, hosting, opening for and/or playing with the likes of Steven Fromholz, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Sisters Morales, Gary P. Nunn, Danny Santos, Steve Young, Willis Alan Ramsey, Todd Hoke, Ben Scales, Clover and Rachel Carrol, Fish Spur, Riverwest, Davin James, Larry Joe Taylor, Tom Russell and Andrew Hardin, Cooder Graw, and more."Night clubs in New York City, like Brother Jimmy's and Hogs and Heifers spend tens of thousands of dollars on ambience like this". ...
| | Bjorn Torske Feil Knapp CD (2007)
Dub Fever album
$13.29 In the six years between his 2001 album Trobbel and this 2007 follow-up, the Norwegian electronica scene that Bjorn Torske helped to pioneer has gone international, thanks mostly to a number of his friends and collaborators, among them Röyksopp, Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, and Erlend Oye. Given that context, the album has the makings of a major comeback statement, but the reality of it is a good deal more down to earth; Feil Knapp is nothing more or less than ten tracks of thoroughly personable, unassuming electronica encompassing a considerable array of styles -- house, ambient, psychedelic disco, dub reggae, instrumental pop -- while maintaining a distinctly lighthearted, amiable sensibility. In less subtly charismatic hands, this degree of eclecticism could come off as glibly chameleonic, but Torske approaches each track as an opportunity for unconstrained, good-humored exploration -- and often, gentle subversive juxtaposition -- rather than rote genre exercise. Hence, the stately serenity of opener "Hemmelig Orkester," with its warm ambient tones and wash of constantly billowing synths, is slyly undermined (though not disrupted) by a meek, unceremonious harmonica; the breezy disco-funk of "Hatten Passer" finds room for bongos, spry clavinet and vibraphone noodling, and a sprightly, faintly preposterous whistled refrain, as well as a few minor explosions (nobody harmed, evidently). Some of the other tracks may conform somewhat more to the self-contained sets of preconceptions they engage with -- "Loe Bar"'s chilled-out lounge-house; ...
