| | Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & T Together CD Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & T Discography of CDs
The least impressive of the ubiquitous quintet's original albums, Together was largely marred by the same problems that afflicted Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mich & Tich's most recent singles -- the awareness that they'd taken their original flamboyance as far as it could go, and uncertainty as to how to proceed. Certainly "Snake in the Grass" was little more than a throwaway when compared to the band's past glories, while the ambitions that would ultimately sunder the group were also beginning to bubble through. Dave Dee himself produced six of the songs on the album, and his inexperience shows in the lifelessness that afflicts such lightweight efforts as "First Time Loving," "Mountains of the Moon," and a trio of double-entendre-ridden numbers ("Below the Belt," "Love Is a Drum," and "P Teaser") that are little more than execrable exercises in smutty juvenilia. It's not all bad, of course. "Margareta Lidman," an ode to one of Beaky's ex-girlfriends, has a proto-prog drive all its own, together with a truly ear-opening Dozy solo, while "Don Juan" was an ultra-atmospheric romp through the backstreets and alleyways of Pamplona. Unfortunately, those same two songs were coupled on the band's latest single -- so, once you'd picked up that, what did you need the album for? ~ Dave Thompson The least impressive of the ubiquitous quintet's original albums, Together was largely marred by the same problems that afflicted Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mich & Tich's most recent singles -- the awareness that they'd taken their original flamboyance as far as it could go, and uncertainty as to how to proceed. Together
$8.65 The Revolution Smile includes: Shaun Lopez (vocals, guitar); T.T. McCord (guitar); Octavio Gallardo (bass); Jeremy White (drums). Additional personnel: Peter Kastsis (percussion). Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California; The Steakhouse and Track Record North Hollywood, California; Larabee East, Los Angeles, California; The Dojo, Sacramento, California. The Revolution Smile is the second band to benefit from Fred Durst's A&R genius, signing to his Flawless vanity imprint in the wake of Puddle of Mudd's inexplicable success. Thankfully, the band's major-label debut sounds nothing like the Mudd's blunt hard rock, and is nowhere near the histrionic frat rap of the Bizkit. Instead, Revolution leader Shaun Lopez (ex-Far) aims to channel the sharply rendered modern rock of Foo Fighters, fueling Above the Noise with alternately churning and droning guitars accentuated by his own vocals, which emulate Dave Grohl in the same way the Mudd's Wes Scantlin apes Kurt Cobain. The churning single "Bonethrower" opens the album, but it's a faceless slice of modern metal that does nothing to establish the band. It's only with the rock-meets-new wave groove of "Payday" and "Alien" that Lopez's songs are able to eke out some breathing room, and lend the Revolution Smile some actual identity. (The latter is forgiven for hijacking its main riff from Billy ...
