| "Happy music" of the sixties Two “happy music” CD’s of the sixties, containing all the hits and some rather unknown songs of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It’s a very good best of collection if you don’t have anything of the Spoonful. By m.vd.toorn (The Netherlands) |

Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca (79175) in May 1970.
In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and--most importantly--a full performance of TOMMY. The sound, enhanced here in a new mix supervised by guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, is crystalline, without losing any of the group's swirling chaos and bone-crushing sonic impact. Though the Who later began to abridge TOMMY live, disc two features the entire opera, while the first disc houses "Substitute," "My Generation," and a blood-pumping cover of "Summertime Blues," among other singles. For any Who fan, this edition is essential.

Jefferson Airplane Volunteers CD (1969)
Singles A's & B's CD music This album made the Airplane's relations with the then ultra-conservative RCA a little tense. The label knew they had potentially one of America's biggest bands on their hands, and were compelled to let them use the "F" word--unprecedented on a major-label release at the time-- on "We Can Be Together." A more substantive sticking point, though, was the group's left-of-center political stance at that time, as expressed on the exhilarating call-to-arms title tune. VOLUNTEERS found the airplane at the vanguard of the burgeoning protest movement as realized in music, and "We Can Be Together" is more of a rallying cry than an invitation to a love-in. Even the Crosby-Stills-Kantner science fiction fantasy "Wooden Ships" is post-apocalyptic rather than dreamily fanciful. "Eskimo Blue Day" and "Good Shepherd" are additional high points, as is the blatant sexuality of "Hey Frederick" where Grace Slick sings "either go away or go all the way in."
We Can Be Together; Hey Frederick; Eskimo Blue Day , and the rest of this 1969 classic are joined by five unreleased live tracks from the Airplane's Nov.28-29, 1969 gigs at the Fillmore East, including Good Shepherd; Somebody to Love; Plastic Fantastic Lover; Wooden Ships , and Volunteers . Up against the wall!

Steve Earle Revolution Starts...Now CD (2004)
Singles A's & B's buy CD music Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date.
With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the war in Iraq ("Home to Houston," "Rich Man's War"), and lambasts stifling conservative forces on the homefront ("F the CC"). There are a couple of love songs thrown in for good measure, and they're all the more affecting for their marked contrast. THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW seamlessly blends the personal and the political without a trace of mawkishness or didacticism.

Easy Rider CDs (1969)
Singles A's & B's songs The definitive 1960s soundtrack to a definitive 1960s film, this album can be seen as the soundtrack not only to the film, but to the era itself. Ranging in style from proto-metal (Steppenwolf) and dope rock (Fraternity of Man) to folk balladry (Roger McGuinn), EASY RIDER conjures up the wild and surreal images and associations for which the decade has been celebrated.
The crunching blues-rock of Jimi Hendrix's "If Six Was Nine" espouses a lo-fi, greasy, axe-wielding ethic that contrasts nicely with the more gentle, reflective melodies interspersed with increasing frequency towards the end. The soundtrack closes with McGuinn crooning the elegiac "Ballad of Easy Rider."
