Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. With American recording studios open to him for the first time, Jesse Winchester traveled to Nashville and enlisted producer Norbert Putnam, who assembled the elements of the Nashville sound, with its strings and horns and backup choruses, to make an album that moved him more toward lush country and especially R&B. Winchester's flexible voice, capable of gliding into a sweet falsetto, made the latter more successful than might have been expected. What kept the album from being one of his better collections was not the slick production -- it was the material. A year after a media blitz had failed to make him a star, Winchester was starting to show signs of strain. He led the album off with the title track, an explicit expression of devotion to his wife, who he mentioned by name. This was followed by a sour on-the-road song, "A Showman's Life," and later on there were tributes to driving and drinking. In fact, the most heartfelt song was "Little Glass of Wine," an alcoholic's love song. None of this was up to his songwriting standard. ~ William Ruhlmann Touch On The Rainy Side Music Jesse Winchester Touch On The Rainy Side Songs Touch On The Rainy Side Review

| | Dustin Kensrue Please Come Home CD (2007)
Touch On The Rainy Side
$10.15 Fans of the band Thrice are already familiar with lead singer Dustin Kensrue's plaintive vocals, incisive, often Christian-themed lyrics, and melodically rich songwriting. His solo debut airlifts all these qualities and sets them down in a quieter, though no less impassioned, milieu. Kensrue delivers intense outlaw-country shuffles ("I Knew You Before"), low-slung, Band-esque rockers ("I Believe"), and straight-up power ballads (the title track) with equal skill. The harmonica-swept locomotion steamroll of "I Knew You Before" clues listeners in straightaway that Thrice frontman Dustin Kensrue wanted to release an album separate from his main gig for good reason. Gone is the chugging and metallic post-hardcore Thrice have been perfecting since 1998; it's replaced on Please Come Home with little more than an acoustic guitar, harmonica, and considerable amount of respect for the traditions of singer/songwriters come before. It might just be luck that Kensrue's down-home delivery meshes effortlessly with this new rustic backdrop without sounding forced, but one could hardly call it luck in his pulling off an entire album of folk and country-inspired fare that is remarkably subtle in its ability to be completely memorable. Yes, the slight Southern inflections that occasionally crop up belie his Orange County home and might initially seem out of place, but even conspicuous cuts like the bluesy rogue of "Blood & Wine" sink in nicely after a few spins. It's a bit of a tease that there are only eight tracks in about 30 minutes' time, but the early-morning ...
