Personnel: Matisyahu (vocals); Roots Tonic. Following up his much-heralded live album and a prominent guest appearance on P.O.D.'s TESTIFY, Hasidic reggae singer Matisyahu unveiled his major-label studio debut, YOUTH, in early 2006. Primarily produced by Bill Laswell (something of an avant-garde equivalent to Rick Rubin), this 2006 outing finds Matisyahu backed by his LIVE AT STUBBS ensemble (here dubbed Roots Tonic), which can turn on a dime from dancehall to heavy rock. Although labeled by some as a novelty act, Matisyahu presents his unusual musical hybrid with passion, whether charging through the fierce, Bad Brains-like title track or plaintively crooning on the acoustic "What I'm Fighting For" (which strongly recalls Bob Marley's "Redemption Song"), proving that his attempts to reach out and transcend musical and cultural boundaries are, if nothing else, genuine. An orthodox Jew who kicks it dancehall style, Matisyahu may seem a gimmick, but he's the real deal. Unfortunately, he's struggling with the sophomore jinx on Youth, an album that expands upon his debut, 2004's Shake Off the Dust... Arise, without capturing its immediacy or excitement, thanks in large part to producer Bill Laswell. No stranger to genre-combining -- he's remixed Bob Marley and Miles Davis and is always up for any world music versus electronica excursion he's offered -- Laswell treats Matisyahu like so many of his previous subjects. He can't resist adding a sound effect swoop and other studio trickery to most tracks, and he often makes Matisyahu's band sound gigantic and polished when they're really tight and free. While the whole affair is great for showing off bass-heavy speakers, the live and exciting Matisyahu that makes the jam band crowd go crazy is hard to find and the tasteful studio touches of his home-brewed debut are absent. His material is also going through some growing pains, but there is growth and for every song that wanders a bit too much, there's a revelation that fleshes out the artist. The spiritual message was always bigger than the man before, but the sparse "What I'm Fighting For" is a surprisingly intimate track while "Dispatch the Troops" flippantly quotes the Police, an unexpected twist from a man who always seemed stately to a fault, even when he was doing the human beatbox thing. At the time of Youth's release, Shake Off the Dust... Arise was out of print and one has to wonder if Matisyahu's new label, Sony, was behind it. Arise's great "King Without a Crown" appears again here and Sony decides to push the single as if this is Matisyahu's grand entrance. That's a total misrepresentation of Youth, which is really more about a talented artist struggling with the pressures of topping his brilliant first album. Even if he didn't, and even if he or the label chose the wrong producer for the undertaking, Youth is meaty enough to suggest this man is no gimmick but an artist with his eye on the long haul. ~ David JeffriesRolling Stone (p.90) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "His voice is nimble....His band plays one-drop roots reggae like a group of Jam Cruise vets, turning up the heat..." Q (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "This is rousing reggae with soaring melodies which harks back to the glory days of the '70s..." Q (p.116) - Ranked #100 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006." Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.44) - "Filled with songs of love and faith....It's varied, musical and just plain funky enough that people will want to listen to these songs for a long time to come." Mojo (Publisher) (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Miller matches his own spirituality with that of his adopted genre." Youth Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Excellett!! This cd is very good. Finally a music that is likable, just about anyone can listen to. I never heard of him until I heard him in P.O.D's Testify. He sings good and is a really good beatboxer, especially in song BeatBox in Live At Stubbs. Matisyahu the lost album Now i have heard all of matisyahu's cd's, but in backwards order. Starting with youth which i thought was an amazing cd. It was great, then i went out to buy Live at Stubbs, (his second release.) That blew me away! The passion with which he sings is amazing! But then i came upon the very rare first album he put out ("Shake off the Dust...ARISE") When i thought i had heard it all, i was wrong. Shake off the dust is by far his best work. It a pure musical masterpiece! Nothing compares to shake off the dust, while all his other albums are great, shake off the dust is matisyahu at his best! Theres so much passion there that is not in the other two albums. Words cannot do it justice. If you are a matisyhu fan, go to ebay or somewhere and get his first album its worth the cost. My only hope is that they re-release it so it can be more easily available. (the only reason im giving Youth a 4 is beacuse Live at Stubbs is a 5 star and Shake off the Dust...well thats like a 10 star. Submitted by Juan (Bethlehem, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bap! I love Matisyahu Youth!
He's no Bob Marley, but who is! His beats, words, and everything else, that comes with it, is great! I listen to all types of music (mostly Reggae, R&B) but this is by far one of the best CD's I've bought in a while...worth listening too.
My favorites--'Unique is my Dove', and 'What I'm Fighting For'. The title alone is worth listening too!

| | Shedaisy Knock On The Sky CD (2002)
Youth
$12.65 Live Recording
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains an untitled hidden track following "Keep Me". Shedaisy includes: Kelsi, Kristyn, Kassidy (vocals). Additional personnel includes: B. James Lowry (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff (electric guitar); Tim Akers (keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Steve Brewster (drums); Eric Darken (percussion). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The exuberance of SHeDAISY practically leaps off this disc, thanks to a dream marriage of savvy, catchy writing, crisp instrumental backup, and inspired solo and harmony singing. There's a sense that the session veterans called in for this one went above and beyond what was expected; on "Man Goin' Down" and the vamp at the end of "Get Over Yourself," for instance, Steve Brewster is all over the drums, never losing the beat yet never lapsing into formulaic patterns. There's imagination in the production too, with a very effective switch to an old-timey radio episode on the bridge of "I'm Lit," and a canny decision to record the vocals, like the fiddle accompaniment, with minimal sweetening on the power ballad "Rush." Which, of course, points to the fact that SHeDAISY has achieved such a fusion of stadium gesture and reference to tradition that they can put a power ballad into a country framework and make it work. In fact, cinematic touches -- muffled voices, a touch of thunder before the melodramatic "Repent," the "I Am the Walrus" strings that gliss from hoedown to hi-tech effect on "Everybody Wants You" -- turn ...
