| | Gary Reynolds Instant Happiness CD Gary Reynolds Discography of CDs
Overstuffed semi-orchestral pop/rock roughly in the same stylistic ballpark as Jellyfish (sort of a third-hand rip-off of psych-era Beatles by way of Electric Light Orchestra, in other words), the debut album by Gary Reynolds & the Brides of Obscurity reveals a singer/songwriter with one heck of a record collection, a knack for big arrangements, and access to a lot of interesting musical instruments. The songs themselves, however, aren't particularly interesting; those vibrant arrangements are in the service of fairly weak, derivative melodies and inconsequential lyrics. An even larger problem is Reynolds' unappealing drawl of a voice, which detracts from the otherwise pleasant sound enough that listeners often can't simply enjoy the imaginative instrumentation on its own merits. Even those die-hard pop fans for whom the term "Beatlesque" is the highest possible musical compliment might find Instant Happiness insufficient. ~ Stewart Mason
Seattle, Washington-based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Gary Reynolds has been making lush, orchestral classic pop under several monikers in several cities for over a decade. Reynolds eschews a specific type of creativity: unrelenting, driving, and constant. His need to create, record, play and work is infallable, and for good reason: his gift for borrowing the soaring, touching hooks of late 60s George Harrison and appropriating the whimsy of Bowie with his own distinct, often pessimistic touch of blues is undeniable. Self-produced by Reynolds and mixed by Robbie Adams (U2, Smashing Pumpkins), Instant Happiness is an instant classic, thick with gospel handclaps, piccolo trumpet, choral backups, wurlitzer, strings, singsong piano, infectious hooks and unforgettable grit. Although his work rewards repeat listens, it's all instantly connective. Electric. Immediate. Gary Reynolds Instant Happiness Songs | 1. | Small Little Pill, A |

Instant Happiness album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Instant Happiness CD music
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting ...

Instant Happiness album
$49.49 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective ...

| | Edge Of Sanity Purgatory Afterglow CD (1994)
Instant Happiness music CDs
$16.05 By the release of their fourth album, 1994's Purgatory Afterglow, Sweden's prolific Edge of Sanity was cruising -- a well-oiled machine with a growing reputation as one of death metal's most exciting, daring, and innovative acts. Like their good friends (and natural inheritors) Opeth, Edge of Sanity's excellence resides in their ability to juxtapose the most blistering, blast-beat-intensive death (bordering on black) metal offensive with melodic passages of startling beauty. In fact, Purgatory Afterglow's epic opener, "Twilight," with its wild mood swings and abrupt dynamic shifts, may well have served as a matrix for that now-legendary group's imminent debut, which, coincidentally, was engineered by Edge of Sanity's mastermind, Dan Swano. Swano's ability to alternate unintelligible death-grunts ...

| | Dreamback: Best Of Anna Domino CD (2004) Import
Instant Happiness album
$14.29 This best-of collection contains 17 Domino songs recorded between 1984 and 1996.
An earlier collection of Anna Domino's work, Favorite Songs From the Twilight Years, surfaced in Canada in 1996, but Dreamback takes the one otherwise unavailable song from there -- the twangy "Dreamback" itself -- to be the penultimate song on this new overview from the LTM label. Released as an adjunct to the label's re-releasing of her '80s and early '90s work in general, Dreamback won't otherwise provide anything new for fans who have said re-releases. Relative obscurities like "Zanna," a collaboration with Luc Van Acker that balances off his deeper vocals and a subdued but strong rhythm with her calmer touch, and the low-key guitar jangle/funk strength of "Hammer" had already turned up on the other CDs. But as a handy overview for people new to Domino's work in general, Dreamback fulfills its brief and then some -- after listening, it's almost incredulous to think that she didn't gain wider attention at the time. Domino's balance between cool vocal control and a sudden, almost nervous energy in her delivery makes for a strong tension ...
