The 14 cuts on Stan Getz's Music for Lovers -- as part of Blue Note's eight-part series -- were all recorded between 1950 and '53. With the exception of "Early Autumn," on which Getz is a member of Woody Herman & His Orchestra, and "Easy Living," as a member of Count Basie's band, these were all small group sessions, quartets. and quintets. There are a number of classics here, such as "Moonlight in Vermont," with the saxophonists' memorable solo and Johnny Smith's empathic guitar playing. Ditto that with Jimmy Raney playing on "These Foolish Things" (which also featured Duke Jordan on piano) and "Tenderly." Another high moment is "Imagination," where Getz interacts with pianist Horace Silver (who has his own volume in this series). This is a lush collection, full of nuanced, graceful ballads and elegant love songs. Everything here comes from the standards book, something Getz was, throughout his career, able to make his own. This is indeed music for lovers, over-the-top romantic, but never, syrupy or melodramatic. This is the first of two volumes that bear Getz's name, and both are worth owning. ~ Thom Jurek

African Swim/Manny & Lo
John Lurie African Swim/Manny & Lo CD  (1999) Original Soundtrack; SDTK

Music For Lovers
CD $13.09  Audio Samples
Much to the delight of fans of the Lounge Lizards' singular, remarkable aesthetic, lead Lizard (and sometime film actor) John Lurie started his own label, the aptly named Strange And Beautiful Music. This dual soundtrack album (the first score, "African Swim," is for a film that no longer exists) is one of the label's first releases, and finds Lurie staying true to the inventive, exploratory nature of his past work, while moving away somewhat from the Lounge Lizards' avant-skronk, toward a quieter, more evocative sound. AFRICAN SWIM moves rapidly across the stylistic map from laid-back grooves ("Al Al Al Al"), through fragmentary chamber music ("Teddy Bear's Nik Pop"), to cool jazz narratives ("Big Trouble"), with the plaintive "Al" theme, usually played on clarinet, acting as a recurring motif. MANNY AND LO is flavored by marimba on several cuts, establishing a pulsing, rhythmic feel interrupted occasionally by achingly lovely guitar duets and thrash punk rock, such as "She's Not a Nurse." Lurie's arrangements are fresh and intriguingly textured, making use of a sizable string section, pots and pans, banjo, Casio keyboards and talking drums, while the presence of guests like Mark Ribot and Medeski, Martin and Wood ensures top notch musicianship. Strange and beautiful music ...
Lo Mejor De La Vida
Compay Segundo Lo Mejor De La Vida CD  (1998)

Music For Lovers
CD $15.65  Audio Samples
90-year-old sonero Maximo Francisco Repilado Munoz Compay Segundo, nicknamed "Pancho," is known for his many years of singing with his own group, Los Compadres, and Miguel Matamoros (also working as a clarinetist). Here he is titled strictly a "backing" vocalist, but he is much more than that, flexibly blending in higher and lower tones with various "lead" singers as Hugo Garzon, Pio Leyva, Felix Valoy, Silvio Rodriguez, Martirio, Omara Portuondo, son Basilio Repilado, and a host of percussionists, acoustic bassists and small percussionists. Segundo also plays a combination guitar/tres called the Armonico, a stringed instrument of his own invention, which is frequently heard atonally strumming as minor spice to the improvisations of others. The vocal-guitar-bass-conga (or bongo) format is exploited in midtempo rhythms throughout these 14 tracks, several of them romance songs. "Tu querias jugar" is the newest "son" song, written by Segundo, a tale of love in vain for a wicked woman, with Garzon's deep lead and the great Elpidio Chappotin's plaintive muted trumpet. The most regret-filled are a lament for one far away with Martirio and Valoy on the weepy bolero "Es mejor vivir asi" and a pining for (beautiful) "Linda Graciela" with young Repilado and trombonist Enrique Bergery. Dour turns to happy on the slow-to-fast Beny More evergreen "Desdichado" ("Unlucky"), with more guitar interplay entering into this tune than the others. "Pepa's Dress," a 1927 son, expresses the colorful nature of Cuban clothing, fawning over said female in her accoutrements. Leyva and Segundo depict a binge of drinking during "La juna del ayer" (with two others), fill "La Ternera/The Calf" with double entendres, and trade lines on the '20s pregon "Frutas del Caney," which talks of hawking fruit at the marketplace. There's also Ernesto Lecuona's invitation to dance on "Para Vigo me voy," the married frustration with "Fidelidad" from Rodriguez, Segundo and Salvador Repilado, and Martirio's stern flamenco-drenched warning ("envy can become a sickness") regarding a departed lover's flight for "Juliancito" with a splendid descarga bridge, the best of the date. Two songs speak of country and home away from home: "Son de negros" is a tribute to Santiago, Cuba inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca, while "Cuba y Espana" relates the two countries' interconnection with a vocal segment, then a full stop, then instruments joining and stopping ...
Lennie Tristano
Lennie Tristano CD  (1998)

Music For Lovers
CD $10.19  Audio Samples
Lennie Tristano didn't record much. In fact, there are only two studio releases from the LP era (and one half of TRISTANO is live). TRISTANO is from 1955 on Atlantic and features some innovative use of overdubbing on Side One, which gives the music a prescient "electronic" feeling. These are mostly impromptu improvisations, although all are executed at the pianist's high level of harmonic invention. Side Two features a quartet with Lee Konitz, who spent his professional life bringing the Tristano gospel to the masses. And what better place than a Chinese restaurant as the group play through a set of standards. It's too ...
