Ex-Irakere percussionist Miguel "Anga" Diaz's first solo album is a complex, constantly shifting blend of styles, from hip-hop to jazz to African rhythms. Diaz's international roster of collaborators, including the French DJ Dee Nasty, Chucho Valdes, and the late Ruben Gonzalez (whose final recording this was), imaginatively layer sound samples and breakbeats, as well as more conventional instrumentation, over Anga's percolating percussion. "San Juan Y Martinez" is a litany of legendary Caribbean musicians chanting Santeria-style over Anga's musical conga beats, and there are also deft Latin-tinged salutes to saxophonist John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" and Charles Mingus's "Round Midnight."

Echu Mingua music CDs
$8.59 It isn't hard to imagine how some jazz purists will react upon seeing the name Steely Dan on one of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz releases; they're likely to ask, "What, in God's name, is a pop/rock group doing in McPartland's presence?" But even though Steely Dan isn't a jazz act per se, they have always had jazz influences -- and it would be a mistake to think of this CD as strictly a pop/rock disc. Actually, the original material of Steely Dan leaders Donald Fagen ...

| | Michael Bolton Only A Woman Like You CD (2002) Bonus Track; Japan
Echu Mingua album
$34.69 Japanese edition features the bonus cut "Only a Woman Like You" (Spanish version).
First things first; Michael Bolton has long since rid himself of that ridiculous semi-mullet that detractors were so fond of mocking. Visuals aside, his sound has similarly gotten an update on ONLY A WOMAN LIKE YOU. The opening track "Dance With Me" is a propulsive, lusty Latin-pop number a la Ricky Martin. If that's not enough of a curve ball for those who think they know everything about Michael Bolton, try the semi-hip-hop rhythm loops underlying "Slowly" on for size. That's not to say that those enamored of the "vintage" Bolton sound should fear finding themselves totally at sea; the balance of the album is filled with slow-burning, melodic power ballads co-written by Bolton with the likes of Desmond Child and Richard Marx. It's just that there's a touch of progress to be found on A WOMAN LIKE YOU, and nobody can fault Bolton for that.
Michael Bolton has been called many things over the years, but never savvy -- and that may actually apply, judging by his last few albums. He stopped having giant hits somewhere around the mid-'90s, but it took him only one album to realize that he need to change direction, bringing Tony Rich and Babyface aboard 1997's All That Matters to help him adjust to shifting tides. It was a move that
